Cool and classy? If only! haha. Well my 2 cents since you asked .... I must admit that there is always a sense of disappointment with its design, mainly because of the controversial/bold changes to cars like the 7er and 5er, so there'll always be a sense of what could have been. I guess the public, motoring world and myself have this sudden expectation that BMW should bring out controversial, love or hate designs - and when the don't there is an uproar. Shows that you can't please everybody.

Nonetheless I do like the design in general. As with most BMW's, the 3/4 view in pictures doesn't look very good (but probably will do in real life), I really like the side profile, and the rear has become very X3's - which isn't exactly a bad thing (particularly with the facelift model). One thing I do really like is the crease along the side. Something about the crease makes it refreshingly new, yet quite familiar with the 3er. In fact there are quite a few strong resembelences to many models in the BMW range.

In the end, I guess the reality is that there isn't much to say about the design because of its familiarity, so I suspect it won't get as much attention in the threads as, say, the 5 series or 7 series.

I do like the design more than the Q7. The Q7 is a good car (saw it about 1 week ago), but I feel the front is far too busy with fins here and lights there. Some would say there has been a role reversal between Audi and BMW with the Q7 and X5 - usually Audi is very much known for their design simplicity, and BMW for their controversial designs. But hey, I'm sure there was a reasoning behind it.

As for the rangie sport you mentioned in your previous post, I've been seeing them around Auckland alot lately! I do like the car, BUT its another car with the feeling of what could have been... if they had done a 4 door translation of the range rover stormer... now that would have been a SUV.

I retrospect: I do love those wheels, they look like the prefacelift x5, but so much bolder!

Re: New BMW E70 X5 official photos & info!

On retrospect, after seeing the direct comparison above, I do think that most normal people will recognize this as a newer model as opposed to a facelift. Of course the styling isn't as extreme as previous BMW models, but the newer model seems alot cleaner and simplier, where everything seems to flow together more harmoniously. I never noticed how busy the E53 is in its design, particularly the front bumper and down the sides. Not too sure if anyone would understand, but to me (after seeing the E70), the E53 design seems to be forced to be made muscular and aggro, like the E70 seems to be naturally muscular and aggro.

I think one thing about the new design is that they've retained the unmistakeble X5ish design features, but have evolved it to a point where most people will recognize it as a new model. If this is the right thing to do, we'll see when the sales figures come out... after letting the design settle in and if I were to choose purely on design merit out of the E53 and E70, it definitely would be the E70.

Oh and the engine bay looks like a big heart:

Or a spaceship.

Re: New BMW E70 X5 official photos & info!

I think the new X5 is a very successful interpretation of the old X5's design. All the typical and recognizable X5 elements (like the front, the shape of the rear lights, the muscular side profile, the layered dashboard layout, ...) were reworked as they should have been... except for the headlights... The line on top of the lights starts like it should - aggressive and sharp - but when it reaches the blinker part, it makes a rather awkward turn to the bottom, much like the X3's lights (which I like just as little). The bottom line of the headlights on the other hand is just too linear. But maybe I'll have to wait till the time I see the new X5 in real life. The headlights are bothering me the most when I look at the car straight from the front. Other than that, no complaints The interior seems very well built, the wood used for the trim is much nicer than in the 5 series, the rims are beautiful as always and the car looks fresh and modern in comparison to his direct competitors...

El Zorro I agree with you. The car has really made it through as an evolutionary design and it really looks good. I love it! I was skepctical with the other pictures from the other thrad, but these look really good. The car has maintained its masculinity and it truly resembles, what I think, an X5 should look like.
