The problem with Canadian uranium is that it is in Canada. The government here seeks to lessen our dependency on imported electricity by allowing a new nuclear plant to be built, and replacing imported electricity with a plant that uses imported uranium might not be the best course.

Nevertheless, even if the company decides to apply for mining permit for the area I was speaking of, it's not absolutely certain they'd get one, and even if they did it'd take a long time before they could actually start operations. If they get the permit, they'll no doubt have to compensate for any damage that they cause to private landowners. Not that the land has any great monetary value, it's mainly forested and the forest growth rate in the North isn't that fast, and with the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if there'd be Greenpeace activists chaining themselves to the trees when it's eventually ready to be harvested...

The company is called Cogema. I know they're looking at three potential sites in Finland, and at least one of those is in a densely populated area where they're unlikely to ever get permission.

Edit: Not Cogema. There are currently four different companies looking for potential uranium mining sites in Finland; the one that is interested in this particular area is not Cogema.

450SEL6.9 will become famous soon enough
Re: Favourite Investments!

Thanks, MikeJ. I didn't see your reply until now. I've heard of Cogema as they are one of the larger uranium players. They're not as large as the Canadian company Cameco. I tend to favour the smaller companies because they are more aggressive in buying new sites and have little or no hedging exposure.

Re: Favourite Investments!

Google has just launched a financial analysis tool for those of you who are interested. It's quite useful and their chart and search system work quite well from what I seen so far.
