Luwalira, you nailed it: the Cell and BluRay are the key price accelerators...but they are also what gives the PS3 its edge. The cell processor will give the PS3 a huge edge over Xbox360, and BluRay will also...along with being a stand alone BluRay DVD player.

Sony insists Playstation 3 will be cheap
Previous statements 'mistranslated'

JAPANESE GIANT Sony has rushed to deny claims that its new PS3 console will cost as much as €499-599.

The comments were made by Sony Computer Entertainment France boss Georges Fornay on a French radio station so it is a little hard to get out of it. But a spokesSony claimed that George had been mistranslated or misunderstood.

George was just chatting about the relative value of the PS3 as a Blu ray Disc player saying if it did come out at that price it would still be a good deal, the SpokesSony said.

"He summarised by saying that PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside," he concluded.

how is the cell going to give it a huge edge?....not if the developers take 2x longer to develop for it!!!!!!.....even a sony ps3 beta tester said it was not as good as all the hype....and blu ray......how is that an edge? i don't get the point in putting a movie on blu ray....they are not going to make movies 2hours longer to fill up the disc...the only use is games...yet how many people are going to start paying close to $100 for a game.....? people think 360 games are more expensive.....now if blue ray discs cost more and ps3 games take longer to develop then the prices are going to be quite high....hell yea me and my brother will probably get one.....but with prices from 500 to 600 euros.......most little kiddies aren't going to get one straight away....MS are catching up with sony.....the only good thing sony make is LCD TV's looooool

The Cell processor does have innate processing power far in advance of the Xbox 360, but the trick is that it requires a very different way of writing code to exploit its full potential. I cannot comment on the beta testers opinion, except to say that properly written code shoudl be markedly superior to Xbox360. As for BlueRay, it will allow for multiple movies to be put on the same track, more features and integration of movies, themed games. The extra space will be used effectively.

Actually, Sony's Walkman range offers better sound quality than any iPod and way better battery life...at the expense of no color screens and an interface that is multiple generations behind the iPod...
