Cars being sound recorded for TV/computer games.

So of you probably know it but don't think about it that much but cars to actually get sound recorded for games and it looks like this when it all goes down. When they are tested they are inned pushed very hard, up to 8000-10 000rmp before they change gear. I don't have anything more to say, just enjoy the pictures.

Yes, craches are also recorded.

Re: Cars being sound recorded for TV/computer games.

One great example would be the M5 in GT4. That car sounds more or less exactly the same as in real life. The most amazing thing is that it was on GT4 Prologue before the public ever had any clue what the car sounded like. That's how advanced games are these days.

WHy they don't do those measurements in an acoustic lab, I don't know. The sound would be that much clearer.

Most game developers are really dedicaded and the gmae industry is a billion dollar industry and the budget for some games exceeds 100 million dollars. I allways say that the picture is only half the experience and that good authentic sound reproduction is as important as good graphics.

Anyone else played that game? I have it and I have mixed feelings about it. The graphics, no doubt is top notch, better than EA games stuff. However I'm having a lot of problems with the number of cars and the career mode. OK yes, you can get the nicest sports cars out there... the "cheapest" thing you start with is a Skyline and that says something. But I prefered the PGR2 set up because you can race in different categories (SUVs, Audi S4, M3, Minis...). The other thing is that there's only 5 cities now??

I haven't gotten very far yet, but that's just my first impressions.

Re: Cars being sound recorded for TV/computer games.

Member Adam from M5board.com had his RUF taken by Polyphony for a few shots and recordings to be put in GT4. So ya theyre pretty advanced these days.

What? Are you sure you start with the skyline and only 5 cities, wtf? I'm still waiting for the store this to set their 360s up for game play. Yeah PGR2 was indeed very good with all of the different car classes and I loved it. PGR3 seem to be good but I need to try it before I make my final judgement.

Now that would be really expensive.. getting the car in there in the first place, with all the exhaust and stuff, and what not.. finding a large enough lab and booking it for all that time.. I don't think the benefits would be worth the cost.

Those crashes are funny, though. Now how long will it be before the companies make some standardised recordings to they don't have to do it over again each time, and share the costs? Or is that as likely as Mercedes and BMW platform sharing?

Yea you start off with 80,000 credits. You had a choice between the SKyline, the Ariel Atom (which is a b.tch to drive) and some other light weight cars. Every race, you get something like 8000 credits. So in a few races, you can already afford a nice car. Only after 9 or 10 races, I'm close to being able to afford the F430...The most expensive car is the Mclaren F1 and that's something like 1,350,000 credits. So as you can see, you don't move up the ranks like you did with PGR2 which imo was better.

As for the cities, as far as I can see, there's: London, LA, NY, something else (can't remember) and Nurburgring. THAT's IT... as of now that is.

It wouldn't be as expensive as you think really. I worked in an acoustic lab the size of a very very large living room and the cost of that lab would be "affordable" for a game such as PGR or Grand Turismo. So to rent it, it really shouldn't be that bad. Like Luw said, sound quality is the second most important thing in a race game and to get a car into a lab really should be done. And the only equipment is a dyno and air flow system to cool down the car, pretty much what they have in the pics.
