Re: The most expensive watch in the world.

I agree with you notic, they are a bit garish and I wouldn't personally want to actually own one, but I do quite like some of their work.

Blancpain and Patek Philippe are my favourites

Re: The most expensive watch in the world.

yea, blancpain does make some very nice watches. last time i was in asia i saw two. one retailing for 150,000SGD and another for about 200,000SGD. amazingly expensive watches. if you prefer that style you should also take a look at Breguet, i hear churchill himself was a fan of the watch.

Re: The most expensive watch in the world.

Osna, my obsession for the Carrera is deep and passionate. I prefer chronographs because the extra dials give the watch a more purposeful appearance.

1. Face - An unusually large face makes for clearer, more obvious time-reading. A more prominent face is also more likely to make an impression on people.

2. Markings - The markings on the watch is white contrasted against a black surface, hence improving both aesthetics and practicality - much like the S-Class's instrument panel. They are also well-spaced without being overly complicated.

3. Needles - The elegant, uncomplicated needles often relate to accurate and immaculate engineering.

4. Simple function - form follows function, and no overly complicated functions are included in this watch. The operations of the Carrera are relatively simple - to keep time, date, and as and when necessary, to measure short intervals of time.

5. Bracelet - The bracelet is thick and masculine, cohesive with the design of the watch.

6. Weight - I like a heavy watch; it just gives me security, a personal preference.

7. Automatic movement - I've got a liking for kinetic energy-driven watches because of the numerous moving parts involved that all work together to make an accurate timepiece. Also, the Carrera is festooned with several jewels to keep accurate time.

However, there are some things I don't really like on the Carrera. The dials sometimes overcomplicate time-keeping. And I've got no real use for the tachymetre.

I hope I've made myself clear.

Re: The most expensive watch in the world.

If chronographs are your bag, I strongly suggest you give the most recent Link models a look. Typically, TAG botches very minute details that compromise the overall thrust of a watches design. In the case of the Carrera, they made a small error with the subdial number which drives me nuts.

I actually prefer the markings on this new Link to the one sitting on my wrist right now. Quite nice really:

There's also a new chronograph that has the Tachymetere on the bezel, also with very nice markings. It's funny - TAG is very inconsistant when it comes to very fine details, but when they nail a design the result is fantastic.

Two other brands I encourage giving a look are Fortis and Tutima. I've found that Fortis in particular has a great passion and respect for the art of modern face design. Tutima has an interesting history, and has some nice pilot's watches.

The Tutima FX line, which is the black-faced watch pictured above, contains some absolutely gorgeous models. Unfortunately, Fortis and Tutima watches will put you out as much as any TAG or Omega, and without the brand cache. Then again, if you want something different and unpretentious, these watches are fine alternitives. I still want to get a Monaco, although I'd love to own a piece from one of these lesser known brands.

Funny. Some brands are completely at home when they're called upon to make classical designs. In other words - pre-modernist design ethic. However, once the same brands are called upon to think out of the box, or come up with something "sporty" and modern they fall flat on their face.

Have you seen some of the modern-style pieces from Audemars Piguet? They're unforgivably garish and ridiculous looking. Same goes for quite a few other established Swiss names.

Anyhow I have found my next watch and it's a Tissot PRC200 which looks extreamly good and can either be hooked up with a leather or steel strap. The best thing with it is that the price isn't too crazy at all, only $300.

$300 USD???? That thing is beautiful for that money!! Where can I find one?

If you're in the US, try Tourneau. They've got stores in lots of upscale malls and whatnot.

Tissot can be found all over Europe in small watch dealers.
