I remember the early 1990s when people were disgusted with the R129 SL because it lacked the visual charm of the R107 SL. People said the R129 would never become a classic and all that, and now, this car is on the road to becoming a sought-after Youngtimer. That's the reason my dad plans on keeping his for a long time. ![]()

Of course I had been seeing photos of it in car magazines for months before I finally saw it. I still think it is Sacco's most fully realized design -- by this I mean I think the R129 embodies the Sacco design principles and style more clearly and thoroughly than any other car. It was the pinnacle of his career at Mercedes as far as I am concerned, his most perfect and pure design. |

Maybe this summer I'll write a comprehensive review out my father's 500SL. It's a joy to drive and it looks pretty hot with the AMG rims he has on. ![]()

It was the most special Mercedes to me next to the W124 E-Class, which I think were the best Mercedes designs (pure as Rob says) in the last 30 years. I can't describe how I felt when I first saw a R129 and then years later when I actually drove it, a SL500 model. Just the other day I saw one, a "Signal Red" SL500 ripping down the I88 doing at least 115 mph or so (because I was doing about 90 mph and he passed me like I was standing still) and the car looked so great. It had the AMG Sport package. I still want one. I think if I were rich I'd collect exceptional examples of this car, silly I know, but that is how I feel about this Mercedes. M |
