But what about its four-door cousin, the S63 AMG? Sharing the same rear-wheel-drive hardware and boisterous 518-hp naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine, it is in many respects just as accomplished as its two-door sibling. At 4.6 seconds, the short wheelbase S63 matches the CL63 in the dash to 62 mph. However, there is a catch to the performance of these latest high-end Mercedes models. While AMG has engineered the CL63 to appeal to the out-and-out enthusiast, the S63 is a little softer around the edges, Mercedes-Benz’s aim being to focus its flagship sedan at a broader audience than that of its gorgeous coupe. That doesn’t mean it is lacking in any respect. It’s merely a different sort of car to drive. No doubt about it, the S63 is more cohesive than its predecessor. The new naturally aspirated engine, which revs to a compelling 7500 rpm, remains the center of appeal. But it doesn’t dominate proceedings like the old S55’s 500-hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8 did. That’s due to AMG’s efforts at improving the feel of the steering, the chassis providing more progressive handling and the outstanding brakes. As a result, the S63 feels more together in its actions and, as a result, more rewarding to drive than the S55. However, its larger body mass and higher center of gravity mean it doesn’t quite match the CL63’s dynamic standards over challenging country roads like those we discovered at the car’s launch in Austria. Best of all? Its high-speed stability. We can’t recall a car feeling so unflustered, so inherently calm in its actions when pushed along above 100 mph for extended periods. The S63 tracks beautifully at high autobahn speeds. The combination of a powerful engine, class-leading aerodynamics and the ability of its Active Body Control system to iron out nasty expansion joints without any unruly pitch sees it devour vast distances with ease. Topping it all off is a deep, blaring baritone exhaust note that even those hardened NASCAR boys would appreciate. Yeehaw!' | Re: Autoweek Review of S63 AMG Great article, I just read this yesterday. I like the fact that the S63 is a more rewarding drive than the already verygood S55. MB fans? looks like we have another winner with the S63. ![]() Last edited by Splenditenes; 10-25-2006 at 04:41 PM. |
