| Mercedes will build a convertible S class! ![]() ![]() ![]() According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a four-door convertible based on the S-Class luxury sedan. The V12 car will be unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, reported Tuesday. The magazine didn't elaborate further on specifics of the car, but said it is inspired by the 1950s Mercedes 300 four-door convertible. If true, the rumor would represent the latest in a widespread model diversification effort at Mercedes. In recent years, the automaker has broken from its core vehicle lineup and expanded its offerings to contain countless niche vehicles. German magazine Auto Motor und Sport reported on Tuesday (June 20) the car would be unveiled at the Detroit automobile show in January 2007 'The project is part of plans to move the brand up-market' . A Mercedes spokesman responded that the company did not comment on speculation. According to the magazine the project was part of plans to move the brand up-market that would be released to management on July 10. It said the German car operations of DaimlerChrysler aimed to revive buyer interest in automotive comfort rather than in high performance. motoring.co.za TRANSLATION VIA babelfish.com Mercedes: S-class as Cabrio Mercedes will present a Cabrio study on basis of the current s-class with V12-Motor on the cars show in Detroit in January 2007. The Cabrio with four doors, long over five meters, spans the largest material roof of recent autohistory. For the interior Mercedes engineers planned likewise much - like once in the 300er of the 50's there is to be luxury purely. | Re: Mercedes will build a convertible S class! Roberto what is your opinion on this? You like it? Do not? I personally don't think this is an aesthetically pleasing idea, however, neither was a 4 door coupe when I heard of it at first. I am not sure man. I am thrown up in the air on this. I would have to go with a no!No!NO! on this one. |

| Re: Mercedes will build a convertible S class! I feel kind of the same ...not sure of the point of such a car ..but maybe that is because four-door convertibles have not been around for a very long time --- not since the 60's I think. |

Yea, I always give the benefit of the doubt and I think everyone should. However, insight and logical thought would tell you that it may not be a beautiful piece of car nor a good one either. I haven't seen a 4-door convertible for the longest. To me I feel that is a design that was used along time ago and it should stay there. However, for some reason, manufacturers today in days can actually get away with a lot, and who knows they may make a limited production and some people will buy them either way. | |

| Re: Mercedes will build a convertible S class! If this does go ahead and is relatively successful (it will obviously be obscenely expensive) then I expect Bentley would follow with a convertible Flying Spur. |

| Re: Mercedes will build a convertible S class! sllek cars do not mend well with long cabrio, the car will be hideous with the roof up, you need a more "boxy" design to lend character to a 4 door yachty cabrio, the old 300 was such a car, the flying spur IS such a car i think the S is too sleek for its own good |
