That's true, a VW logo plastic extender you will see in the normal lights. But then what can you expect from VWs.

That reminds me of the time I sat in a Maybach... but I wasn't able to get any pictures of the headlights with a dying camera battery; I was happy to get a picture of me!

It's a special touch.. but I doubt you'll actually see the R8 name written on the road as you drive, especially since it's infront of a bulb and not xenons. To my memory, Maybach was the first to have this little idea.

I always wondered why car manufacturers didn't do this more often, especially with their brake lights. It's like a mini advertising board where the company's logo can constantly be lit up. But then again.. it also would seem a little riced-out and an extra cost.
