Der R8 als Elfer-Konkurrent, dazu die Verflechtungen zwischen Audi, VW und Porsche - wenn das nicht der Stoff für eine brisante Familiensaga ist. Die Gene des R8 stammen vom Lamborghini Gallardo. Und auch er will alles andere als den Softie der Sportwagenliga abgeben. Schon mit der ersten Zündschlüsseldrehung signalisieren seine Instrumente mit einem dynamischen Rechtsschwenk der Zeiger: Achtung, wir sind bereit. Der Achtzylinder meldet sich zunächst eher zurückhaltend zu Wort. Der Ganghebel rückt in der offenen Kulisse knackig in seine Position, und los geht’s. (The Audi R8 is a Porsche challenger. Partly based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 awakens with a nice roar and then settles down into a low slur. The V8 can't really be heard at first. We put the slick 6-speed in first and let her rip...)

Mit 420 PS gegen 1.560 Kilogramm, lautet der Marschbefehl, der umgehend und elegant bewältigt wird. Der V8 dreht vehement, ja turbinenartig nach oben. Erst bei 8.250 Touren bittet das Drehzahllimit um die nächste Fahrstufe. Die 85 Kilogramm Übergewicht, die der Alusportler gegenüber dem Elfer auf die Waage bringt, scheinen nicht zu existieren: In 4,6 Sekunden geht es aus dem Stand in Richtung 100 km/h (Porsche 4,8 Sekunden). Wenn man sich hurtig durch die Gänge hangelt, dann sollen erst bei 301 km/h (Porsche 288 km/h) die Fahrwiderstände den R8 einbremsen. (With 420-hp and 1,560 kg of weight to haul around, the R8 is fast, really fast. The V8 engine rev's quickly and stops at 8,250 RPM's, time to shift into second gear. Despite being heavier than the Porsche, we clocked the R8 from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds (Porsche = 4.8 seconds). The R8 tops at 301 km/h, the Porsche at 288 km/h.)

Doch wie grenzt sich der neue Audi zum Konkurrenten aus dem eigenen Stall, dem Gallardo, ab? Für die Alltagstauglichkeit bekam der R8 einen 90 Millimeter längeren Radstand. Er ermöglicht einen beachtlichen Komfort, ohne dass der R8 zum Cruiser geworden wäre. Bei Bedarf kann man mit ihm enorm flink durch die Kurven wedeln, obwohl die Lenkung nicht ganz so spontan wie beim Elfer reagiert. "Das nehmen wir in Kauf, denn wir wollten den R8 speziell im Hochgeschwindigkeitsbereich absolut beherrschbar machen", so Michael Dick, der frischgekürte Audi-Entwicklungschef und einer der Ziehväter. (Compared to the Gallardo, the R8 got a 90 mm longer wheelbase. The R8 is still comfortable despite not being a cruiser. The R8 can be driven hard and confidently through curves, the steering however isn't as agile and direkt as that of the Porsche. "We accept this," says Michael Dick (product developer at Audi), "because we wanted to make the R8 easier to control at higher speeds.")

Das blitzschnelle Verstellen der Dämpferrate durch Anlegen einer elektrischen Spannung (Magnetic Ride) hilft hier, die Karosserieneigung in Grenzen zu halten. Wie es sich für einen Sportler gehört, wird die Vorderachse allerdings nur mit 15 bis 30 Prozent der Leistung bemüht. Um den Rest müssen sich die beiden Hinterräder kümmern, was ihnen in Kombination mit dem weich einsetzenden ESP gut gelingt. Dabei darf der R8 trotz Mittelmotor-Bauweise eher zu den Gutmütigen seiner Gattung gezählt werden. Ist das ESP in der ersten Stufe deaktiviert, werden etwas weitere Heckschwünge zugelassen. Aber auch ganz ausgeschaltet ist der Sportler erstaunlich gut beherrschbar. Alles andere als gutmütig vermag die Bremse zuzupacken. Das Ansprechverhalten ist super, die subjektiv spürbaren Verzögerungen auch. (The advanced suspension helps keep the car in check in every situation. Only 15-30% of all power is channelled through the front wheels, the rear wheels do the bulk of the performance driving. With ESP turned off, the R8's rear likes to break out in drift maneuvers. Still, with ESP set to "off", the R8 remains an easily controllable car. The brakes are good too.)

Der V8-Motor im R8 posiert in der Fahrzeugmitte imposant unter einer Glasglocke. Selbst das Parken wird mit dem R8 zu einer Inszenierung. Man steigt aus, heißes Metall entspannt sich knisternd, und der V8 wird über die "Coming home"-Funktion in seiner Vitrine ausgeleuchtet. Kann eine erste Ausfahrt emotionaler enden?
