Porsche aims towards the Veyron!

The 950bhp car, to be called the GT1, will hit a top speed of 254mph -- that's just a shade over the Veyron's 252mph top whack. However, by the time the GT1 arrives, the game may well have moved on, since there are strong rumours of a faster Veyron under wraps. The GT1 will be based on the Carrera GT, using a modified version of its carbon fibre chassis but with a different nose and tail, plus a roof. The dashboard's said to be very similar too.

We don't yet know though where the power is to come from. It could be a modified version of the GT's V10 or a turbocharged V8 -- the engine in the Cayenne -- but bored-out to 5.5-litres.

Autocar's source was leaked official drawings of the car.

not gonna happen...VW won't make a car to beat its own...they're not gonna make the same mistake twice...

If such a car is to be produced it will probably be more like the GT1 or the 959 which have been produced in very limited numbers. It will be more of a collectors car.

VW doesn't own Porsche, if anything it is the other way around with Porsche being the single biggest shareholder in VW. Anyway I doubt if Porsche will spend millions on a while elephant (financially) like Veyron.

Well I'm an optimist, and I think it will happen. The 997 GT2 was not supposed to happen and it is going to happen. With a CGT successor that raises the bar above the CGT it makes the turbo S and GT2 make more sense in the pecking order. Since new CGT's are still sitting at dealers I think Porsche will have learned their lesson and will make much more limited quantities. Development wise, just change some carbon fiber bodywork and slap twin turbos on the thing. It also makes sense for a Porsche return to the upper levels of racing, as by 2009 Audi will have gotten enough mileage out of the R10 and the 997 GTS has already been beaten by the Panoz GTS and the F430 is sure to have some success too.

I think porsche will make this car, but with nowhere near 258MPH. Porsche isnt about that.

Last week, we told you about a report in the latest issue of Britain's Autocar magazine indicating Porsche was working on a new supercar to compete with the Bugatti Veyron. With 950 hp and a top speed of 254 mph, the Porsche "GT1" would be positioned squarely against the $1.3 million Veyron. Speed TV has since republished the whole article online, plus Autocar's artist's rendering of the car.

I'm really curious to see what the car will look like. Its production is bound to be limited to 500-1000car.

well that looks like a CGT on steroids..im sure porsche will come up with a more thrilling design than that
