997 Turbo vs. 959 - European Car Magazine

It's five o'clock on a clear summer's morning. I'm traveling on a deserted stretch of highway at 155 mph. At this kind of speed, the senses have to be focused. Even the slightest distraction can mean death-it's that simple. Yet I'm behind the wheel of Porsche's latest 911 Turbo, feeling totally secure, and there's still sixth gear to go. My hand leaves the wheel to knock the lever into top. There's at least another 40 mph left in this astonishing car and it powers on with a relentless hunger. But opportunities like these are fleeting and I have to lift off. 70 mph feels walking pace.
As brilliant as it is on paper, there is little to differentiate the new 911 Turbo with a car twenty years older: the 959. Both have power going to all four wheels, have twin-turbocharged flat-six engines mounted behind the rear axle, put out more than 400 bhp, crack 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reach 197 mph flat out. So what exactly has twenty years of progress resulted in?

Re: 997 Turbo vs. 959 - European Car Magazine

This picture... it's... it's breathtaking. That 959 still manages to look so taut and purposeful. That stark white paintjob with the black detailing, it looks like a Storm Trooper. If Vader had a supercar it'd be...

Two of my all time favourites together in one shot. I'm decidely pleased so thanks Dom!

The 959 is such a pinnacle car for its time - it really ruffled the feathers at Maranello forcing the creation of the F40 - and surely is only eclipsed by the Macca F1 and Veyron in its significance in the pursuit of higher performance. Ok... perhaps the Carrera GT is also up there (in a different kind of way) as a result of its ability to carve through any corner.

Nonetheless, the 959 is a truly special beast and easily the most collectable of all 911s.

Can't wait to read the review.

Great post Dominic, thanks.

The 959..what is there to say? It's a technological masterpeice, even by today's standards.

I'm also amazed by 959 and I look on it on a very different way than on many other cars. It was and still is exclusive, rare, innovative, wild and stunningly fast...The very best of that time in one car. True legend!

Cool article. If Darth Vader had a car, it'd be an all black RUF RT-12

Great article. This is a cool photo:

"Golfer Nick Faldo used to own a 959. When his then-girlfriend found out he'd been cheating on her, the scorned woman vented her hellish fury by attacking the car with his clubs. The insurance company probably hasn't recovered from the bill."
