2008 Polo to be powered by a super-frugal 1.4 turbo engine

At the annual International Motor Symposium in Vienna, Volkswagen unveiled the new turbocharged 1.4-litre direct-injection four-cylinder TSI petrol - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER that will power the 2008 Polo and will also be used later this year on the Golf and Touran.
According to - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER the new engine develops a claimed 122bhp along with 148lb ft of torque at an ultra-low 1500rpm – figures that outgun VW’s naturally aspirated 1.6-litre direct injection four-cylinder engine to the tune of 7bhp and 33lb ft.
The new engine is based around Volkswagen’s excellent Twincharger powerplant, as fitted to the Golf and Touran, with a bore and stroke of 76.5mm and 75.6mm respectively. Unlike the existing 140bhp and 170bhp Twincharger engines, however, it dispenses with the supercharger, relying solely on a - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER to swell its reserves.

So essentially it's a 1.4 lt TFSI and not TSI.

This is good news indeed. Consumers in countries with taxes on displacement would benefit from this.

Though, would turbocharging affect the longevity of the engine? I'm also guessing FC would be lower than the 1.6FSI?

According to article FC is good and comparable with the 1.6L.

As for the longevity of the engine, VW have tested these engines over long distances.

If it loses the supercharger then it can't be a TSI unit, technically speaking.

That's true but they will probably still call it TSI for marketing reasons.

But we all know turbocharged engines don't last as long as NA ones. I wonder how this 1.4 would compare to the 1.6 in terms of longevity.

I don't know if that generalization is correct... there are lots and lots of old turbo cars around with massive mileages (and they're not all diesels).

Re: 2008 Polo to be powered by a super-frugal 1.4 turbo engine

With modern engine management systems and monitoring electronics, turbocharged engines can last as long as they're engineered to. It's misuse, abuse and aftermarket modification that renders them unreliable and prone to failure.

An understressed turbo engine is likely to last longer than a high-revving, highly stressed NA engine.
