Re: The Greatest

Very hard to pick one car as some of you said. Very tempting to pick the W123 as it is one hell of a car. I also like the design on the gullwing but this bmw is even more awesome to me:

Love this 503 as well!

^IMHO non-biased opinion. What makes a good car? It's not how fast it goes to 100 km/h but the internal qualities. The W123 was solid, reliable, well-built and brought its occupants from A to B in style and comfort. It was practical, fuel efficient (for that time, excluding the 250, 280 and 280E models) and had "performance" (again, for its time). This car IMO is without question the best German car ever built. This is also the car which got me to become a Mercedes fan.^

One magazine called it "Without doubt, the best saloon car of the 20th century."
I believe Mercedes used to have a factory rally team for the W123 so it definitely had to have potential. It was light (3100-3600 pounds depending on model and year) and robust.

However, my vote for the greatest German car would actually have to go to the original Beetle or the Gullwing. Both had character, were lovable, and were the epitome of German engineering for two very different purposes.
