VW and DaimlerChrysler Consider Joint Projects.

VW, DaimlerChrysler Consider Joint Projects, Including Polo

Bernd Pischetsrieder, Volkswagen's CEO, told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that his company and DaimlerChrysler are in talks on a range of joint projects, but they are avoiding competition between Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

"We have been discussing this since 2001," Pischetsrieder told the magazine in an interview released ahead of Wednesday's publication, according to Reuters. "And why shouldn't one consider, for example, cooperating with Dodge on the [VW] Polo?"

Cooperation on a subcompact car does not mean the two models must be built on the same platform, he said, and they could have sharply differentiated features.

The one taboo in the talks: Volkswagen has insisted it will not cooperate with Daimler's premium Mercedes car group in any area that would compete against VW's Audi brand.

VW already planned to get a version of Chrysler's minivan.

What this means to you: From the sounds of it, Dodge may be considering bringing in something smaller than the 2007 Caliber, based on the VW Polo.
