Why do we see sequential manuals in budget cars?

I was flipping through the papers when - blimey! - I saw a Citroen 107 with a 6 speed sequential manual. Then I realise, it's the same for the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo as well, as it is a collaborative product.

Anyway, this isn't the first time. I've seen it in application also in a Proton.

Any tech whiz out there who can tell me why this is so? It's jerky, not very user-friendly and I thought only sport cars use them.

Re: Why do we see sequential manuals in budget cars?

These are the lower end sequentials, not as fast as the SMGs or Zeroshift.
Besides, F1 drivers belive they're quite friendly.

Who said otherwise ?!

Well I think I can safely say, that a conventional manual or a CVT would do better in such a car. I don't think maintenance for these sequentials would be cheap too, right? My curiosity lies in why they chose a sequential when there are no obvious benefits (to me) for a budget car.

Also, it's very interesting that you don't see the sequential manual in mid-priced cars.

Re: Why do we see sequential manuals in budget cars?

A possible answer: It's because boyracers are in the target group and a seq. gearbox is appealing to them since they can imagine they are driving an F1 car?

I don't know, but i'm gonna buy my budget car with the all time classic manual gearbox. It works fine for me!

PS. Another questions that comes from James thought. Doesn't a sequential manual gearbox cost a lot? So the so called "budget cars" are not thaaaat budget after all if you add this gearbox... It is very pointless indeed!

Nice thought James

What's so interesting, you almost always see these gearboxes exclusively to either sports cars or really down-to-earth barebones budget cars. Surely is something to think about.

Really? But that doesn't explain why these gearboxes don't appear generally in mid-priced cars.
