Re: My home town in the Winter

Very nice pictures. At least you guys got snow, we only got a couple of inches so far. The temp is usually in the 40's and 50's - unusual if you ask me (global warming anyone?)

Most would call it "Little Prague" indeed.
Some say it's like Vienna and Prague having a daughter: Ljubljana - nice, little, friendly, lively, picturesque.

Even nicer in the Spring & Summer:

Our national Tourist Board should have been paying me for doing all this promotion.

I was somewhat close ... and it is really beautiful, both winter and summer.

I'm trying to organise a trip through Eastern Europe next year. I'll make sure to add Slovenia to my list if I ever get to do it.

This Winter is the real Winter: lot of snow, and temperatures well below 0 centigrades. But it vary from year to year. Some Winters come with almost no snow and with higher temperatures than average, some are rich with snow and very cold. Same goes with the Summer: sometimes dry, sunny and very hot, sometimes wet, and not so hot & sunny. But what is happening in the last years is that transitional seasons (Spring & Fall) are very short: after long Summer Winter comes quickly, and vice versa: after long Winter the Summer reappear rapidly.

Thanks. But its more like town than a city: 350,000 population. But its our largest city.

You won't regret coming to Central Europe, especially to Slovenia. The Western tourists rediscover our country when we have joined EU. Most people are amazed since they expect Slovenia is all gray, dull, dirty, poluted ex-communist country. But it's far from that.

And it's very close to Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Budapest etc.

Definitely Central & Southern Eourope is more worthy to see than Northern part (sorry, guys) - the belt from Chezch Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia (the coast), all to Switzerland, Italy, Southern France & Spain & Portugal.

If you come to Slovenia the places not to be missed are: Ljubljana, Maribor, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Logarska dolina valley, Škofja Loka, Postojna cave & castle, cost town Piran - and the country side: especially the wineyard areas.

It's everything you want in one small place: sea & coast, alpine lakes, mountains, spas, wineyards, picteresque towns, lot of forest, limestone caves, castles, golf fields, ski resorts, great food & wine, fishing, extreme sports areas, and 32 different dialects of Slovene language, etc. - all that on an area slightly smaller than New Jersey.

The pics were taken in December when the town centre is heavily decorated celebrating the Christams & New Year time: from early Dec - early Jan. It's worthy to see that in December - sight from a fairy tale - with all the people shopping on the banks of the river where traditional open market is placed - drinking hot sweeted wine with spices, or honey liquer, eating sweets or other traditional fast food, singing, dancing, chatting.

But even out the New Year's season the coloured buildings are illuminated with blue or white reflectors. Only the yellow lines/borders are not there, and no street decoration (Christams trees etc) is present. Also the castle is illuminated, but no yellow reflectors on a hill.

It looks like this:
