also, she was shot first, in the neck and chest. That's what killed her. The killer then blew himself up, to take out as many people as possible and go to his "virgins" stupid SOB

Political situation in Pakistan has been always very complicated, complex, and multi-layered.

Too often we in the Western World get wrong impressions what's really going on on the crisis spots around the world. We only get what our media report (usually quoting news agencies), and we interpret that by our own standards and limited knowledge about the issue.

Many times a deep knowledge of history, geography, politics, political economy, religions etc is needed to really understand such situations. But neither this can lead us to the ultimate truth, but Just to the best possible understanding of the circumstances and factors that influence the situations.

So, I'm afraid we will never truly know who really is responsible for Mrs. Bhutto assassination, and why exactly was she assassinated.

Re: Benazir Bhutto, Pakistani opposition leader, killed in suicide attack

Artist, I too did not know you were from Pakistan. I think you are absolutely right and very rational in your comments. I also believe innocent lives were repeatedly put at risk by very public rallies. From the reports I saw today, she was advised by security officials not to hold that homecoming rally in October, where 140 people died.

What has happened to credible journalism these days? I saw the news this morning and one of the so-called credible news networks was very quick to interview a guest who promptly accused the Pakistani government of being behind this. I was just disgusted to hear that. I know some people are angry, but a news network should have enough professionalism not to air such comments . . . unless they are trying to influence viewers themselves.

Jeff, the Pakistani elections or the American presidential primaries? I think the effect on the Pakistani elections will be profound, i.e. they won't go forth as planned. I think the effect on the U.S. election could be felt as well. I watched a discussion about it on TV just now. Personally, I think the assassination will mean that the experienced candidates (Clinton and McCain) will win the early primaries.

I was referring to the Pakistani elections. I personally don't feel it will have any effect on the upcoming American primaries.

Also, wasn't Bhutto really corrupt when she was in office? Now all the media is making her out to be a saint.

Are you sure?
OK, it depends what will happen next in Pakistan.
But very unstable conditions in a country with a nuclear weapon, where Islamic extremists are on the rise, where a militarist dictator is in charge, where democracy is not present, in a country that is currently in a very strategic interest of USA.

You know a country is in trouble when people justify such a brutal act as "she was asking for it".

You think they should censor these comments?

Many critics have said the Pakistani government did not provide Bhutto with enough security.

We probably can not be certain who precisely is responsible, but I think we can be fairly sure why she was assassinated.

She sought to bring democracy to Pakistan and made it clear that she would support the American "War On Terror". Bhutto was very out spoken against Islamic extremism.

Al Qaeda and pro-Taliban groups have bases in tribal parts of Pakistan, it is most likely that a group associated with Al Qaeda was responsible.

Until it can be proven, I think airing such comments was unprofessional, at best. Therefore, I think such guests should not be allowed on a credible news program. Let me clarify. The guest suggested very, very strongly that the actual attempt was plotted by the government. There's only one problem: he can't prove that, certainly not a few hours after the actual assassination! And yet he gets airtime on an international news broadcast!

I really don't know all the details about the inadequate security criticism, though I do think a lot of people that have said it on television don't understand security and how big the security apparatus would have needed to be in order to protect her completely. In short, I don't think some critics realize that providing her with enough security is pretty darn hard. With those crowds she had at her rallies, in that region of the world, the amount of manpower and technology required would be massive and then some.

Specifically, does anyone know what more security she or her supporters wanted?

Yes, she requested to have four armoured police escort vehicles and electronic jamming equipment (presumably to prevent cell phone detonated bombs).

As far as I am aware she got the electronic jamming equipment ...and her vehicle was heavily armoured. Also, there were hundreds of police present when she was killed.
