| More details on the next-gen Audi A2 To help reduce its average carbon-dioxide emissions levels to the 120g/km limit proposed by the European Council, Audi is planning to launch a host of new fuel-efficient models with cleaner tailpipe emissions. One of these will be the second generation A2 hatch, a car that was dropped in July 2005. The original model utilized expensive aluminum construction, which essentially priced it out of the small car segment and led to its market failure. For the new model, Audi will share components with sister-company Volkswagen in an effort to keep costs low, reports AutomobilWoche. This means that the next A2 will likely share its platform with the VW Polo, including its range of small fuel-efficient engines. Audi is also tipped to release an even smaller A1 minicar in 2010 as well as a new Q5 soft-roader and possibly a smaller Q1 crossover. Audi’s management team previously made the announcement that it intends to extend its range of models from the existing 22 to a total of 40 by the year 2015, so we wouldn’t be surprised if even more models are announced for production further down the track. |
