I know this is probably going to sound stupid, but I have a million things that "attract fingerprints," and I don't know what the big deal about all the fingerprints is.

Can someone explain it to me?

I'm not saying it's crazy, but I don't really know why everyone makes such a big deal when things like the iphone, psp, ps3, ipod, etc come out.

Fingerprints are ugly. We want our gadgets to look spick and spank everytime we see it, and fingerprints just spoils the 'delicate' look of the device. Furthermore fingerprints need to be constantly cleaned off because they are so easy to make.

I can make an analogy here. I would never, never ever want to see dirt on the car; just like how I don't want to see fingerprints on my device.

Anyway, I love how it looks. I guess I can say that it is the best looking phone in the market right now. The user interface is also typically Apple, very intuitive, very smart and very stylish. I especially like the messaging conversations part, which is very useful to me.

However, I agree with the sentiment that this is just a 'for show' device. It looks good, yes, but I can bet you it'll have poor battery life (something unacceptable in a cell phone) and after a while you'll get tired of either using a stylus or finger to access functions through the touch-screen. I had a phone-PDA once, and I gave up because of these reasons. Too heavy, too little battery life and too bulky for use.

I prefer a candy sized conventional phone with the functions of this iPhone.

It's the most amazing phone ever, and the exciting thing is although it has a 2MP camera and a touchscreen, it's thinner than the Motorola Q.
All I have is a K800i...

Looks good, but I think that it won't take off. Apple is trying to break into the phone market, which is already dominated by so many players, in particular Microsoft and Palm, who between them have about 70-80% of the PDA market.

Its just like Microsoft trying to break into the MP3 market, their MP3 player is doing dismally, because the market is already dominated by iPods.

This is where I think this this phone/PDA fails:

- No 3G.

- No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.

- No expandable memory.

- No removable battery. (?!?!?!?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?!)

- No Exchange or Office support.

- Its not a smartphone (i.e. apps cannot be installed on it), yet its so big compared to the other phones in the same category?!

- It introduces another new OS for phones in an already saturated market. There is not enough standardisation between PocketPC/PalmOS/Symbian etc, so why introduce an entirely new OS to worsen things.

- MaxOS X for a phone is going to be buggy as hell in this iteration. Its been designed for a Desktop Operating System for crying out loud. Not a low power, small mobile device.

- The fact that there is only one phone that uses this OS screws it over even more, since support will be worse for the OS from the various communities.

- It has no buttons. Buttons provide tactile feel, which people want since it gives them reassurance. Apple is a leader in User Interfaces, and I'm somewhat shocked to know they don't include buttons, because its well known in the UI community that buttons best. If I want to answer a phone, I press the answer phone button. I can do this without looking at the screen or with my eye's closed. Think the number of people who were against the iDrive/MMI interfaces.

- I watched part of the newscast, and they said they want to reinvent the phone :| Thats like reinventing the wheel. Why do I want to learn how to use another phone, when I'm 100% happy with using my phone as it is.

- Apple has thrown everything into this phone, most of which are firsts for them also (i.e. not tried and trusted), such as the Wifi and phone features. Companies like Nokia and HTC have evolved their products to the market, incrementally adding features but improving on them in each iteration. That is, they have learned from their failures along the way. Apple has gone and made this thing a video player/phone/music player/entertainment device in their first attempt and added so many features that they have never had experience in before. Something is bound to go wrong.

- Its got those bloody proprietry ipod connectors and components. If I buy a phone I want everything with it. I don't want to pay another $50 to get a special headset.

- No Stylus?! What about fat fingers?!

- It won't be available to most markets until 2008, by which HTC/nokia/samsung/sony-ericsson will have 3G/GPS enabled phones already.

- Microsoft own 90% of the Desktop market. People are used to the way that the Microsoft Windows UI works. With the iPhone people will have to relearn how use the MacOS UI. People don't want to learn anything.

- For a normal phone (i.e. not a smartphone or a PDA), its insanely expensive.


I'm convinced already that this phone simply isn't revolutionary. It promises alot, but so did the Microsoft Zune player. I'm sure this will be the next Microsoft Zune player, and will easily be outmuscled by the competition.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my opinion. Personally I think that anyone that buys this phone hasn't done enough research on whats out there at the moment, and so much better. The only reason they would get this is because they think they its the 'cool' thing to have, not because its the best device.

Your last paragraph sums everything up - this thing will sell, no matter how featureless it is. As long as it has basic features, slap trademark Apple insignias and cues and you have a winner. Same story for most Apple products.

Take the iPod for example. It has poor features: no full compatibility for all video formats, no radio (for my generation at least), no full compatibility for all media files (have to convert all of my WMA files) and yet it sells like hotcakes. As repeated by Osna and others in the forum the Apple brand is unfathomable.

That's how things are these days. Apple could probably launch an MP3-player with nothing but a play and pause button and people would still buy the damn thing. Some apple fan boys out there are very non-critical consumers who love the brand so much that they eat an apple every day.

I love how you guys are bashing this this thing and saying how bad it is before even being released or tested.

You're even bashing iPods in here, there is nothing wrong with iPods, and I have yet to find a better product, there is a reason why they sell so well.

You guys just seem like anti-anythig Apple, microsoft fanboys.


and how can you say this is featureless, it is smaller than anyother smartphone or pda out there and it has more features than anyother out there. And complaining about no radio?? the whole point of an ipod is to have your own music so you dont have to listen to the radio.
