Well Lu I'm not sure what you're using to measure that, or that "hype" even matters. For cars as common as a Ford or a Chrsyler I'm sure their respective companies will go for the sales. Virturally no car keeps the same "hype" years later, especially high volume ones like the 300 and Mustang. In the "hood" the 300/Magnum/Charger are the car of choice by well.....well people that live in the hood.

I am surprised I didn't get a more hostile response from the Benz-brigade.

What I liked about these shots was the contrasting color. The SLR is silver and the Gullwing in black.

Nope, why would you. Clearly the SLR was compromised from the start because of Mercedes demands of a automatic transmission and ride comfort being similar to regular Mercedes.

Hopefully AMG will be allowed to do their upcoming sports car (whatever it is) the hard-core CLK-DTM way, with a DSG style gearbox, a manual and a automatic as options. We know MB can build a world beater, but the relationship between MB and Mclaren was rife with bickering I'm betting.

The original SL was a straight-out Superleggera sports car ...conceived and built with integrity and vision.
I agree with everything here except for the character part. I am sure the SLR has character of some sort, but definitely not on par with the 300SL.

I'd still love to testdrive one if I had the chance.

That phoney F1 nose destroyed any chance of that car having any character besides a phoney one. Yes it is a fanatstic super car, but character ... no. 300SL on the hand oozes character.

What sucks is that MB even managed to tarnish McLaren's image with that car.

Many times when a car is thoroughly restored, the odometer is rolled back to zero. I believe MB does this with the cars they restore for their customers.

Personally, I like the SLR-nose on it. IMO, that part gives the SLR some character. It also looks fantastic on the R171 SLK.

How did the SLR tarnish McLaren's image? By all accounts, the engineering that went into this car is fantastic and high-tech. If anything, the joint-venture between MB and McLaren showed what can be produced if two great companies cooperate.

Re: Pictures: SLR meets a classic; 300 SL

It is amazing how plain-looking the SLR's interior looks when compared to the Gullwing's. Mercedes needs to regain touch with their past interior design. I am no fan of classical cars in any capacity, but that interior gets me dreaming.
