Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

But Alex, Maybach already has two sedans on the market one normal wheelbase the other limo like. The next logical step is to make a coupe or cabrio. Saturating the market with a bunch of sedans will do no good for the Maybach brand especially with the dire straits they are in at the moment.

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

I don't know how much the Bentleys cost but if the MM 51 would be in their price range I would not see anything strange with this strategy. Mercedes and Bentley are in different weight divisions even though the most expensive Mercedes' are in that price range. Provided they'd be a bit more creative with the shape and looks, I would like this idea very much.

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

If they make it distinctively different from the W221, people will not draw any comparisons. It would then be a viable move.

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

Weird how they have changed the size, all I have heard is it's going to be called a 53!

I'm sure this car could find a market, as shown by there being an Audi A8 and Bentley Flying Spur! Although I think this 53 will be much more expensive than the Flying Spur, or it will be too close to the S class on pricing! I can see owners of S600s and S65s upgrading for more money because they would want something more exclusive!

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

I don't see the point at all [of a smaller Maybach], as donau said, the top Mercedes [S65] is already in the same price range as the Bentley FS.

Lenght:
Now, in the case MM made a MM 51 (indicating a lenght around 5100mm) the car will be shorter than W221 S-class. That does not make sense. Even if they make MM 53, the car will be still too close to W221.

Price:
The "cheapest" MM 57 costs 365,500 euros (in Germany). That leaves an approx. 160k euro gap between S65 AMG and MM57. OK, that's enough to fill it with a smaller MM.

Power:
MM 57 & 62 feature 550PS, 57S features 612PS. So, there is no room for to squeeze the right engine in while not to interfere with W221 on one side, and MM 57/62 on the other.

So, why would anyone buy a MM with same or even less power than MB W221, similar size than W221, same features than W221, and similar shape - but at addtitional price of approx. - let's say - 50-100k euros?

Has MM brand really enough brand cache to steal customers from W221?

I agree with the others: coupe / cabrio are more possible to appear.
Good post EniLab ....and I can't argue with your logic

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

Very good points out forward by Enilab. I personally would mind MM shocking the market with an uber four door coupe based on the cls with slightly more head room in the back.

Re: Is A Compact Version Of The Maybach Coming?

That could work Lu.

Daimler-Chrysler almost created a brand by accident with the Maybach. Originally the Maybach was intended to be one "top-of-the-line" model, the Mercedes Maybach. Now, because they chose to resurrect the Maybach brand, they face a strange situation where they want to expand the range of vehicles that technically compete with Mercedes-Benz. The CL, for instance might be cheaper than Bentley GT, Ferrari 612, or Rolls-Royce Corniche, but it still actually is a competitor in that market -- and out-sells it's competitors (and not just because of it's price). Maybach makes things a little bit messy for Mercedes in my opinion -- I think Maybach should remain as a single model, the top limousine -- leave the super coupes and SUVs to Mercedes. Why would DCX build the MM Exelero [for example] when Mercedes-Benz have the SLR -- it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Perhaps not a coupe but a large cabrio would work since Mercedes is lacking in that segment.
