If I'm not mistaken, Trump paid $40 million for the mansion. The market hasn't gone up that much since then. He's done some work on it, but does he think the Trump name is worth that much?

Rob, in the Bridle Path section of Toronto, there is a replica of Rosecliff going up. Bridle Path is where newer money lives. Prince has a house in there. I do like the Rosecliff design, but personally, I like Ochre Court and Marble House better. I'm sure you know, they are Newport properties also.

As far as hugely proportioned mansions go, I think Ochre Court is amongst the best.

They are wonderful houses ..from a time when America's most powerful families were buying whole ship loads of European art and furniture objects to fill their vast new mansions.

Ochre court is another very French style mansion -- really magnificent.

The Marble house was the Vanderbilt mansion -- it looks very English to me -- English Regency period. The interior in the Louis XIV style is amazing.

If you ask me, I think the Trump mansion is utterly distasteful, like his apartments in New York all flashy and golden.

Give me a ranch in Colorado with many acres, and a beautiful wooden house, or modern house against the snow and the forest OR give me a house in the Greece, or in a beach with beautiful relaxing hammocks.

I would agree, especially based on the interior pictures poste by 450SEL. The exterior's not to bad though, minus the water fountain.

Those pics were not of Trump's mansion. The interior pics were of Marble House, the Vanderbilt summer home in Newport. It was built in a much different era, the age of the Robber Baron. That was a different level of lavishness. I believe Marble House cost like $11 million over a hundred years ago.

Clarendon Court is another nice English-style mansion in Newport, infamous house, really.

My bad I understand what you mean about the era, in that case it's kind of cool that it remains true to the era that it's built in.

Actually, they are not at all true to the time they were built in. The marble house mansion was built at the end of the 19th century -- it is an imitation of the Louis XIV style from the 17th century.

The true style of the late 19th century was more like this:

Designed by the Belgian architect Victor Horta in the Art Nouveau style.

What makes Victor Horta's buildings particularly interesting is the use of raw industrial elements used in a decorative way -- the steel beams, rivets and bolts are all still visible -- the engineering of the building is also decorative -- this was a totally new concept inspired partly by Charles Darwin and his observations of architecture in nature, but also by the new industrial age.
