Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

The odd thing is the people who have actually built the sky-scrapers (the Indian and Pakistani workers) can't even afford to live in Dubai - they live in their own communities (usually not good housing either).

Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

I think the sad thing about Dubai is that looking at these pictures, people would think it was one of the richest places on earth, but there are many people who are very poor, who are often forgotten about! I watched this programme on TV about Dubai and it was saying how all the workers came for places such as India and Eastern Europe! People went out there to get workers, and said such things as, if you want I'll give you $2000 now if you come with me (more than a years earnings for some of these people) and when they get to Dubai it's very different to how it was described to them! They work over 12 hours a day, and on building sites, safety is very bad! Many people have lost their lives building these amazing buildings!

That is true. For a couple of weeks ago a strike was almost going to take place due to the workers who were very unsatified witht heir wage of around 3 euro/dollars per day.

True, sad how some construction companies dont give a damn about their workers .. its a real shame that people like these do exist. That said, the people who suffer are a minority, but that doesnt make it okay for other people to do this.
