The United Arab Emirates

There sure are some big buildings going up - I hope to visit Dubai some time - it has the potential to be one of the world's great cities.

Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

I been to Dubai last December - it was truly fantastic, the standard of living they can achieve within such a short span of time. This dwarfs Singapore's progress into the First World, I'll say.

Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

I have visited Dubai, and its true the development there is mindblowing. But I have a problem with one thing...it doesn't realy have a true city centre. Well not that I could tell. The 'BIG BUILDINGS' appear to pop out from the sand..literally. Theres no big podiums with stores, galleries, public squares and other elements of streetscape that make cities like London and New York so fantastic. Maybe these elements of the urban fabric will come in time.

Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

I agree with Porsche Guy. This economic expansion and development, perhaps overdevelopment, cannot continue up in a straight line. Correct me if I'm dead wrong, but Dubai is not really an oil-driven economy like many other Arab countries. Oil revenue as a percentage of their economy is much smaller. Their economic surge was promoted by capital being invested in new property development as the pictures indicate. Where is this capital coming from and what kind of returns are the providers of this capital seeking? I think 1960s, 1970s Hong Kong looked somewhat liked Dubai. Property prices in HK are much higher now than in the 1970s, but the rise wasn't in a straight line. There were major drops along the way.

The late ruler of Dubai deserve a world of credit for promoting this growth beyond oil.
I've been to Dubai years ago on a stopover flight. I'd like to visit one day and spend time there.

Re: Dubai - The past and the present.

Revenue created from oil has been invested in, real estate, tourism, and foreign investments. Its true its overdeveloping, this is why they kept many of the projects on hold.
