Golf GTI

hello fellow members
i constantly check on GCZ, but rarely post,
the reason i'm doing this now is because, i'm seriously considering getting a new car at this point, and the GTI is the highest on my list.
first i was wondering if there are any owners who could provide me with some feedback,
second i just want to know what you guys think of the car , in the term of performance, quality , price and so on so forth , you know the full works
thanks

Re: Golf GTI

The Golf GTi is a great car. It has been named by numerous car magazines as the best in it's class. Nice choice.

PS. If you can, buy the DSG version which has the best gearbox in the world right now.

Re: Golf GTI

I just read an article last night comparing the JCW mini cooper S, the Civic SI, and the GTI 2.0 TT. The GTI came out on top for several reasons. It was the best at everything except lap times where the cooper was able to out corner it by a little. They said it was almost as responsive as the S but not quite. They thought was the best value as well. R&T April issue.

Re: Golf GTI

thanks a lot for the the input guys
Yannis,DSG is definitely on my option list, although i would love to get a manual car, it's sometimes it can be really anoying to drive in my country. ( but this is from someone who is used to drive automatic 95 % of the time)
I've been reading recently that vw isnt doing as good as car company, do you guys think that this might affect vw products in terms of building quality?

Let's face it. Cars are becoming more and more complicated for the past years. As a reason they have so some many electrical/electronic systems that surely something will go wrong sooner or later. German cars have been plagued with many problems for the past few years and that of course goes for all makers no matter if it's a VW or a top of the line Mercedes. Chances are the more expensive a car is the more problems it will have. A E class for example has twice as much problems as C class (German TUV report) for the first 2-3 years.
Of course the same goes for Japanese cars. For example Mazda RX8 had a lot of problems with the transmision for the first year of production , Mazda 6 had severe rust problems a couple of years ago, Toyota had oil sludge ploblems, Honda had and still has unexpected airbag deploy problems ect.
As you understand no matter what car you get there is always a chance you will get into trouble.
That said as an Audi owner i never had any problem with any of the two models i owned (A3 and A4) furthermore our VW Polo which we sold recently was bulletproof for the 3 years we had it (now we bought the facelifted model) so i wouldn't worry much if i were you.

Re: Golf GTI

Thx Yannis, well you're right of course, no car is problem free, and given that the golf is based on the A3/A4 plateform, it should run well.
by the way, you would be glad to know that we also have an audi A4, (2004) no problems so far, but honnestly i wish that the steering was a bit more responsive or more connected,
anyways thx again

No problem. The A4 has light steering but on the other hand the build quality is the best in the auto industry. After 30k km with my car in bad quality roads with lots of potholes you cant hear a single sound from the interior since all the plastc parts are so well integrated and fited. Audi's solid fell is unrivaled in the auto industry.

Re: Golf GTI

I would so that the A3 is more based on the Golf platform, but ok, same thing eh

Well, if insurance is no problem, or getting 98RON petrol, then GTI is a fine piece of car. It's been awarded many 'best in class' prizes, if not for outright driving dynamics, then a convincing mix of that, and practicality, and a decent price point.

Good choice. If you can find one that is - waiting lists in Australia are about 6 months, last time I heard, and I expect GTI's aren't exactly plentiful anywhere else.

Yes A3 and Golf use the same platform. Audi A4 uses a different one which is not shared with any VW model.
