Post Official: New Volkswagen Golf Variant (Geneva Preview)

Volkswagen has just launched the new wagon version of its popular Golf hatch, which picks up the Golf Variant title in following with previous generation models of the estate. Measuring an extra 36cm over the regular Golf, the Variant offers up to 690L of storage space with five passengers on board. Fold down the rear seats and you’re looking at a load space of 1550L.

Unique exterior features include the new tail lamps that wrap around the sides of the rear fenders as well as the tail gate. The Variant will initially be launched with two gasoline and two diesel engines, which includes a 1.4L 140hp (103kW) “Twincharger” TFSI model. The diesel engines produce 105hp (77kW) and 140hp (103kW), with mileage rates of just 5.2L/km and 5.6L/km respectively.

The car will be unveiled for the first time at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, with sales scheduled to start by mid this year.

Re: Geneva Preview: Volkswagen Golf Variant official

WTH?! The rear looks very Korean. Especially the rear lights are just wrong. I'm surprised how different the back end is compared to other Golf-line models. They didn't use the same design philosophy as with the Passat Variant (very much in line with the sedan) which BTW looks very nice.

Re: Geneva Preview: Volkswagen Golf Variant official

Now drop the Golf GTI 2.0 16V TFSI 200 Bhp engine under the bonnet and you might have an understated and underrated Q car there.

The 2.0 16V FSI 150 Bhp is nice in the Golf Hatchback, but in a heavy car like this one it just doesn't cut the mustard.

Make sure to give this Station Wagon the 2.0 FSI TDi 170 engine as well; and you might have a decent family hauler. 140 Bhp doesn't cut it.

In the Golf Hatchback the 2.0 TDI 140 Bhp is fine.

But I'm not so sure on the Golf Variant...

That explains...

Why you're not sure for Variant? You think it's too heavy or what?

I think it's too heavy. The Jetta (which is a Golf Saloon) already weighs 1500 Kilograms.

I wonder how heavy the Variant will be.

I don't think that it will weigh that much that 140 hp won't be enough... I'd say that for Passat Variant, but somehow i'm sure it will be enough or let's say, just perfect for Golf Variant..

I might be wrong though

Re: Geneva Preview: Volkswagen Golf Variant official

The rear lights are very un-VW and un-German indeed... they remind me of some old Honda or something.
