The GL-Class will need more than the Mercedes-Benz name New Nav = text book definition of FUGLY right next to Paris Hiltons picture. The GL on the other hand will have hard time appealing to the baby boomer generation here, at a price of $70k+, they'll probably sell slightly less than the ML. |

I was griping about this with the guys at work a couple of weeks ago. Ford has dropped the ball with the new crop of Lincoln designs. Their Zephyr (Soon to be the MKZ) was off the mark, and now the Navigator is a bona fide misfire that can't/won't hold up against the Escalade's raw street appeal. The big problem with the GL isn't the power of its engine, but how late it showed up to the party. Range Rover and Caddy have planted their flags firmly in huge-'ute land and there's only so much pie to go around with gas prices the way they are. On the other hand we're really dismissing the raw street appeal of Mercedes Benz. Being late to the party could become an asset in the eyes of those who want the latest and greatest thing sitting in their driveway. I don't doubt for a second that the GL-Klasse will impress the gonads off those who care. Mercedes is being cautious about the GL, but I'm being bullish. I think the world has been waiting for a massive Benz SUV for quite some time. A shame we didn't have one 3 or 4 years ago. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: To dethrone the Escalade. The GL-Class will need more than the Mercedes-Benz name I don't think so. Some may not like the Escalade but it does have an image. The GL on the other hand seems like the incarnation of comfusion. It seems like a click and paste car made by a 4 year old, not a 5 year old one. It would need a bigger engine AND more bling-controversial-original design. Right now it looks like an underpowered-overpriced-click and paste-pastiche. The words "comfusing world is real come to mind. The G on the other hand. ![]() |

I wish we had something more fresh on our hands, like the with the new M, but the lines are undoubtedly contemporary and "get the point across." I don't put it on a vehicle like the GL to carry the banner on cutting-edge design. I put that weight on the S-Klasse's shoulders - to which I've been somewhat dissapointed. |

The GL design is unique IMO because it combines a "tough American truck" look with "European elegance". I like it though I would never consider the V8's or the gas V6. For a car like this, a 3.0 V6 CDI would suit my needs. But that's just me. ![]() |
