Hamilton to partner Kimi for Chinese GP?

Quote:
Lewis Hamilton could make his Formula One debut for McLaren at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix, according to the current occupant of the seat.

Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa told commercial television channel Tele 5 that he still has not been told whether he is going to be needed beyond this week's test at Silverstone.

In sunny Northamptonshire, de la Rosa was on Thursday narrowly outpaced for the first time by 21-year-old Hamilton as the Briton's maiden Formula One test concluded.

I'd like to see Hamilton test a little bit more before jumping into a racing seat but it would be very nice to see how he would do

"The team will soon decide who they want for China," de la Rosa said.

A decision is expected early next week.

That will be an interesting show albeit his(Hamilton) inexperience on the F-1 stage. But I have no doubt that he will do fine- he is a smart and talented driver.

NOT a good idea on Mclarens part, he has no experience yet other then testing once... He is also off the pase in testing against the GP 2 of Renault.

I think McL wants to test his skills in a race (as opposed to testing) so that they can make a decision for next year whether to race him or not.

Kinda what BMW did with Kubica.

Re: Hamilton to partner Kimi for Chinese GP?

Totally different, Kubica had been a rest driver for ages for BMW before he drove a race, so he was quite experienced. Hamilton only had 3 days I think in the F1 car and was not all that impressive... He needs more time, he should race the last race, not this one.

You're spot on, Charles. Kubica was logging miles and miles as tester in a F1 car before he jumped in a race seat. If Mclaren puts overrated, inexperienced Hamilton in a car, it's just for publicity.

I don't think he should race the final GP. He should not race next year. He should test and come in for 2008.

Well, Renault is bringing Nelson Piquet Jr. next season.
Remember Kimi also started as a unexperienced driver, who skiped a few stages.
Who knows.

You have a point, but I wasn't comparing the drivers or their experience level. I merely think McL wants to try him out and he works out good, if not he'll be shipped to another series.

As Imhotep Evil mentions, the same was done with Kimi... he came with no experience and if you remember well, Kimi even had a hard time to get his superlicence.

The latest...

Quote:
De la Rosa races in China

McLaren-Mercedes have this morning confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa will race at Shanghai at the weekend.

The news is contrary to rumour that young star and new GP2 Champion Lewis Hamilton may have been in line for a debut in China.

De la Rosa is confirmed only for this race, however, as the team reserve the right to decide who will partner the outgoing Kimi Raikkonen on a race by race basis.

As well as Hamilton Mclaren also have another Briton, Gary Paffet, within their test driving ranks, and he has also been linked with a possible race seat in 2007.

Re: Hamilton to partner Kimi for Chinese GP?

After Lewis Hamilton's maiden test and speculation linking him with a Chinese debut, McLaren has nonetheless confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa will remain in the race seat in Shanghai.

Good decision on Mclarens half.
