Features: Letters Editorial | Letters | Off On F1 | Race Features Seeking A Scapegoat Wednesday July 05 2006 The verdict is finally in: Juan Pablo Montoya isn't to blame for the Indianapolis multi-car pile-up. Instead the blame rests with Ron Dennis, Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld and perhaps even JV's singing... Stop Picking On Montoya I am a JPM fan for many years and I must agree that JPM often makes mistakes that could have been avoided but I would like to say something about this subject. First of all, I do not understand why that everybody likes to hit out at Montoya? He always seems to be the black sheep. I wonder if those who lash out at him have forgotten the golden years of Formula one with drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna. They have shown a lot of actions like Montoya does these days, but back than everybody liked it and thought it was awesome. I think that it's not about Montoya but about the change of mentality in F1 these days. No one seems to appreciate drivers like Montoya anymore, everybody got spoiled with the talent of Michael Schumacher and now everybody wants to see Schumachers on track. A driver who hardly makes mistakes and who dominates and controls everything. Guys who drive with their instinct doesn't seem to please anybody anymore. I remember a racing incident that took place a very long time ago at Hockenheim where Piquet wanted to pass another driver and collided with him. He got out his car and started to kick the other driver. Back then it was very cool and good show. If Montoya would do this in this new era of F1 than they would kick him out of F1 with immediate effect. Just the same thing is going on with overtaking problems. All the drivers complain about overtaking problems but the teams give their drivers the order to not overtake on track because it would cost more time than overtaking in pitlane with pitstop tactics. Understand? who can understand this? If F1 continues going on like this than we will see many boring races in the future. So don't blame individuals but see the bigger picture, those guys make mistakes under tremendous pressure. Teams are today using their drivers as puppets in a huge muppet show. That is the real problem in F1 these days and not one individual. Think before reacting. There is a bigger picture behind one action. ![]() | |
