F1: Spy scandal rocks the 'Ring

Spy scandal rocks the 'Ring

May 6 (GMM) A spying war has broken out at the Nurburgring, according to German reports. It is claimed that a communications specialist at F1 championship leader Renault has successfully tapped into Ferrari's encrypted radio systems -- and Ferrari know about it.

'Bild' newspaper said the Flavio Briatore-led camp 'monitored every word' spoken by Ferrari's engineers and drivers throughout Friday, including secret technical and race strategy information.

The Renault specialist is reportedly using a high-tech piece of equipment to do the spying, whose efforts could not be thwarted even by Ferrari changing its radio frequency several times.

F1's governing body is apparently aware of the alleged saga, with an 'insider' at the FIA telling Bild: ''It is not a secret that the top teams invest a lot to obtain the information of other teams.

''But without strong evidence, we cannot intervene.''

What ever happened to the gentleman racers? F1 has become too commercial, too big and too political. It's about racing. I think golf has gone down the same road. Golf used to be a gentleman's game. Now, I think golf has been ruined by vulgar golfers with unbelievably bad ettiquette. The manners displayed by the top golfer is especially wretched. I remember the 1999 Ryder Cup, a bi-annual golf event pitting Europe vs. America. After the fiasco and invasion of the course by the U.S. team and players' wives, a prominent sports writer said that Ugly Americans were making an arse out of themselves (again) at an international event.

Yeh, F1's no longer just a sport, it's a business. There's just so much money involved, you can't afford to simply sit back and only look at your own situation. Just like businesses keep a close eye on their competitors, so do F1 teams. It's rather tragic...but let's just hope that increased level of competition and rivalry somehow end up benefitting those of us who watch F1.
