Midland Racing and Super Aguri have called for Red Bull’s B-team to be ineligible for constructors’ points until it falls into line and uses a V8 engine. STR’s rivals argue that while the rule to allow V10s was introduced to help teams that were struggling financially, Toro Rosso doesn’t fall into this category and enjoys an advantage by using the Cosworth unit. But team co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz has dismissed these claims and added that agreements were already in place when he bought the team at the end of 2005. "We simply were the successors of Minardi and there was no other way than to take over the current contracts, including the V10 with Cosworth,” he told autosport.com, adding that his rivals may be suffering from a touch of sour grapes. "I would rather today than tomorrow switch to a V8, but it is simply not possible. For me, it has been proven that the air restriction and the rev limit of the V10 work. "But some teams have to get used to the idea that Toro Rosso is not Minardi. You cannot expect this team to be backmarkers forever." Mateschitz added that there is every chance that STR will continue using the engines in 2007 as well. "Yes, we have a contract in place until the end of 2007,” he said. "If we alter that into a V8 contract, we have to make sure with Cosworth boss Kevin Kalkhoven that we would get equal treatment to Williams." Source = ITV F1 |
