Villeneuve criticises Hamilton starts

Jacques Villeneuve has openly criticised Lewis Hamilton's driving at the start of Grands Prix this season claiming the McLaren driver was pushing his luck with the rules against chopping across and weaving in front of rivals.

"When will the chopping moves stop?" Villeneuve asked Autosport magazine. "Lewis is not being punished for his behaviour off the start line and he's started to look the way Michael Schumacher used to."

"So far he's been lucky so we'll see if it carries on," he added. "He makes progressive moves that would have got some of the other drivers black-flagged. He is very fast but he still has to step up to the plate and beat Alonso. And we haven't seen how he reacts under pressure yet."

not that i am a crazed hamilton fan, but seems every washed up F1 driver wants to bask 15 minutes in the light by criticizing or parising him
grow up children, stewie is way more mature than you, and he's a 1 year old in a dysfunctional TV family!

Formula One drivers rallied around Lewis Hamilton on Thursday in defending the McLaren rookie against a suggestion by former champion Jacques Villeneuve that his driving was dangerous.

"I think sometimes Jacques talks quite a lot with the press and...sometimes he talks too much," Renault's Italian driver Giancarlo Fisichella told a news conference at the Canadian Grand Prix.

"I think in a way Jacques might find it more and more difficult in the future to find comments he can give that we can be asked about," added Williams' Austrian Alexander Wurz.

"I see no problem with racing. You know it is hard, you just have to defend your line."

Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion who left Formula One last August after being replaced at BMW Sauber by Poland's Robert Kubica, told Autosport magazine that he was concerned by Hamilton's race starts.

"When will these chopping moves stop?" asked the Canadian. "He makes progressive moves that would have got some of the drivers black-flagged."

Hamilton, 22, has finished all five of his races so far on the podium and is level on points with teammate Fernando Alonso at the top of the standings. He has made some sensational overtaking starts in the process.

"Jacques deserves to have his opinions about it and I can respect that, but this is racing," the Briton told reporters at the circuit named after Villeneuve's late father Gilles.

"If you are cutting across people, being dangerous and possibly taking them out, then I would totally agree," he added. "But that has not been the case in any of the races I have seen.

"It has not been dangerous up until now, and I think you can see that it is for the FIA to make the choice."

Re: Villeneuve criticises Hamilton starts

If other washed-up drivers can spew garbage from their mouths, Jacques can too. I'm no fan of him, even though he's Canadian, but Jacques is not the only driver who runs his mouth.

Are his comments valid? Probably not, but they are no more invalid than Jackie Stewart using Hamilton to take a shot at Schumacher and saying that he (Schumacher) was not as good as he should have been, but Hamilton can be, etc . . . Jacques' comments are no more absurd than a bunch of British ex-F1 drivers calling Hamilton the biggest thing ever after a handful of races.

One more thing, Jacques was active in F1 recently and his knowledge might be more up-to-date. Guys like Stewart, Watson, Moss, Lauda, etc . . . were not active in the past twenty-years, but people still consider them experts. Now, no one said that Jacques is objective, but are the retired British drivers objective when they start praising Hamilton or any other British driver? I think not!

I hear ya, don't like the immediate praise from the retired drivers either. Thing is though, I liked them personally, because they are better drivers while Jaques will always be "the son of" and " almost", despite his world title. That makes his comments, in my book, more irritating.
