| Alonso: 'Impossible' to run away with title Fernando Alonso believes it will be “impossible” for either McLaren or Ferrari to run away with the world championship as the season progresses. The two teams' respective drivers have been locked in an intense battle at the front of the field so far in 2007, with BMW's Nick Heidfeld the only driver posing a consistent threat to their domination of the opening three races. And double world champion and championship leader Alonso reckons that the season will continue in the same vein. "Ferrari should be our main opponent and I see a very interesting season in front of us, I think with no opportunity for any of us to really open a gap and win the championship in a relaxed way,” he said. “I think this is impossible this year and we will see a very close fight all through the season, which will be great for the sport." Despite Ferrari winning two of the season’s opening three races, McLaren leads both drivers’ and constructors’ tables going in to the first European leg of the campaign next weekend. Alonso says that naturally the goal for both him and the team now is to maintain those positions over the coming months. "After the fantastic start to the season and with us leading both the championships, the expectation really is to remain in that position, as long as we can and try to win both championships,” he said. “This is a realistic target as we are in good shape. “For the Spanish Grand Prix and for the rest of the season the target should be to beat Ferrari and the rest of our opponents." | Re: Alonso: 'Impossible' to run away with title Part of the reason no one can run away is the ridiculous points system that rewards 8 pts for finishing second! The object is to win races. If there is only a 2-pt. spread between 1st and 2nd, just play it safe and race for the second step. |

But in its early and most glorious old days Formula 1 also had a 2 points difference system, namely 8,6,4,3,2,1. That's part of the reason S. Moss never won despite being a constant runner up, since Fangio, then Hawthorne and Brabham took the points/podiums if they couldn't win. After the 8,6,4 system camed the 9,6,4 and then 10,6,4. Also before WWII, witch some see as the golden age of GP racing, the points system was 1,2,3,4 he who had less points won, and the diference between 1th and 2nd was of just 1 point, the smallest ever. None the less, by all this point systems, Alonso and Kimi would be tied, but Massa, Hamilton and Heidfeld would be (further) behind. | |
