![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: The Malaysian GP Ferrari’s Felipe Massa outduelled Fernando Alonso in a thrilling final qualifying session at Sepang, pulling out all the stops on his final lap to knock the world champion from the top spot. Alonso had dominated qualifying until the dying moments, setting the pace in both knockout sessions and again with his first run in the top-10 shootout. But in a frantic climax to the session, Massa retaliated with a flawless lap of 1m35.043s to edge out his McLaren rival by a quarter of a second – reproducing the kind of form he had shown in free practice on Friday. The pole protagonists’ respective team-mates were confined to bit parts on this occasion, although Kimi Raikkonen looked threatening in Q3 and momentarily moved to the top of the timing charts. The Melbourne winner ultimately had to settle for third place, 0.4s adrift of team-mate Massa but some 0.6s clear of Hamilton’s McLaren. The British rookie had caused another stir by setting the fastest time in Saturday morning’s final practice session, but never really seemed to find the sweet spot during qualifying. Even so, the fact that he appeared mildly disappointed by qualifying fourth is a measure of just what an impact he has made in his fledgling F1 career already. As in Australia, BMW Sauber proved the third quickest team, with Nick Heidfeld qualifying a strong fifth, albeit 1.5s off the pole time. But an inspired lap from Nico Rosberg ensured that the Hinwil-based squad did not succeed in locking out the third row, the Williams driver demoting Robert Kubica to seventh on his final flier. Next up were Toyota duo Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher – a respectable showing from the unheralded TF107, this – while qualifying ace Mark Webber rounded out the top 10. It was an inglorious afternoon for Renault as the defending world champions and winners of the last two Malaysian GPs failed to make the cut for the top-10 shootout. Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella will share the sixth row of the grid, the rookie boosting his personal morale (battered by his ill-starred debut in Australia) by outqualifying his veteran team-mate. Spirits were even lower in the Honda garage after another disastrously lacklustre showing from the RA107. Jenson Button struggled manfully to 15th on the grid, which he judged the maximum the car is capable of right now, but Rubens Barrichello could manage no better than 19th after switching to the spare car following gearbox problems earlier in the day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: The Malaysian GP Sure was a great race for Mclaren, and that move by Hamiton in the first corner to overtake both of the ferraris was awesome. I can't believe how quick he is considering this is only his second GP! 3rd in Oz, 2nd here, wonder what's next. Alonso had a very good race as well. Wasn't very impressed by the Ferraris though, though should have been able to beat the Mclarens, and all those mistakes by Massa while behind Hamiton cost him a lot. I was very impressed by Heidfeld, while watching the race, I was looking at the live timing on the F1 website, and Massa wasn't really being held up by much while behind him, and in the last few laps, he was actually pulling away and matching Kimi on pace. That BMW seems very impressive, I'm sure they're going to do very well in the next few races! |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: The Malaysian GP WOW, good race and my GOD Hamilton is really good. McLaren have definately improved, but then again Ferrari lost the flexi floor. I'm no McMerc fan, but Alonso and Hamilton are drivers for this season. |
