When 20-30 years is written in a book, or seen in hindsight, it's easy to see patterns and periods of change, because you contemplate it all in the blink of an eye. That said, it could also be because there are many constraints on design these days. For example, the earlier car designers could have progress by making things either 'normal', or more aerodynamic - their choice. These days, a certain level of aerodynamic competence is expected, so that's one choice that's been made for the designer. Perhaps, then, the progress is being made elsewhere. Quote:
![]() Actually, if you equate "avant-garde" with being confronting to the point of being ugly, then perhaps people are indeed more conservative. Depends on your point of view. --- I think those orange bars are a translucent Apple-style (a la iMac bubble computer) touch, allows you to see inside somewhat. | ||

They've got to get the SLR selling better and keep it selling for a few more years and a roadster will do the trick along with the revised (sportier) coupe model, likely to be called the Track Sport. The roadster is going to be stunning. The little car that Roberto posted at the start of this thread is what I think the next Smart should have been: ![]() For a city runabout this thing is a cute as a speckled puppy. Imagine a car that looks like that, inexpensive, built to Mercedes standards with go-kart handling? It would be a hit all over the world in crowded urban areas. M |
