Today the true Avant-garde is virtually non-existent.
My feeling is that history always seems so slow and when you're living in it. Maybe some day people will look back at Bangle, and maybe some other visionaries who will come in perhaps a decade, and say that it was an era of advancement. However, we don't know, because it could be just around the corner..

When 20-30 years is written in a book, or seen in hindsight, it's easy to see patterns and periods of change, because you contemplate it all in the blink of an eye.

That said, it could also be because there are many constraints on design these days. For example, the earlier car designers could have progress by making things either 'normal', or more aerodynamic - their choice. These days, a certain level of aerodynamic competence is expected, so that's one choice that's been made for the designer.

Perhaps, then, the progress is being made elsewhere.

However I'm one of the few people that truly respect these guys who go for something out of the ordinary.

BTW, what's with the orange bar lining the bottom of the doors of the Citroen concept?
I think so, too. People have warmed to Bangle's designs well enough, perhaps as they are somewhat less confronting than this. However, my take is that, despite being more radical than the norm, they actually look good. People usually aren't masochistic enough to buy something they think looks bad, just to make a point about supporting the avant-garde. IMO, those Renaults don't actually look good. Or maybe I'm just one of those conservative types

Actually, if you equate "avant-garde" with being confronting to the point of being ugly, then perhaps people are indeed more conservative. Depends on your point of view.

I think those orange bars are a translucent Apple-style (a la iMac bubble computer) touch, allows you to see inside somewhat.

Here is another Citroën Concept, it is called the C-Buggy -- what a great little vehicle

My new favourite concept car this year is of course the BMW Mille Miglia Concept.

I wonder when a convertible SLR will be made, I'm sure there is a market for such a car!

Re: My favourite concept car so far this year.

They've got to get the SLR selling better and keep it selling for a few more years and a roadster will do the trick along with the revised (sportier) coupe model, likely to be called the Track Sport. The roadster is going to be stunning.

The little car that Roberto posted at the start of this thread is what I think the next Smart should have been:

For a city runabout this thing is a cute as a speckled puppy. Imagine a car that looks like that, inexpensive, built to Mercedes standards with go-kart handling? It would be a hit all over the world in crowded urban areas.
