I agree shonquiz, the SLR is one vehicle which did not need to be "toned-down" in order for it to sell .........in fact, it might be more popular if the production version was more faithful to this concept.

My favorite concept car this year is the one from SAAB. Its very futuristic, has character and is very scandinavian.
Just to comment on the SLR concept I think it is one of the most striking concept car even, when it was unveiled it simply stole the whole show. The one who designed it is a genius, does anykown the name of the designer?

I like most concepts at autoshows, but why build them when a lot of them don't end up being produced?
What happens to these concept cars once the car shows are over? Can you even drive them?

ohh that SLR concept brings back some good memories..i remember every one went nutts when they showed that..
ppl that didnt even know abt cars still have that concept as wallpappers on their pc´s and cell phones..gotta be one of the gr8st

Concept cars give car manufacturers time to play and have fun burning 1-10 million on one single car. Most radical concept cars are not meant to be produce but rather to give us a hint of the manufacturers up and coming design language. Although the concepts gives us hints some production cars end up being heavily influenced by previous concepts.
Come concept cars are fully working while others have very weak engines in them, making them able to roll in 10-20km/h and then there are those which are just clay models. Once the shows are over the cars are often driven the manufacturer's showroom.

I've read somewhere that it was designed by Murat Guenak, the current VW head of design. The official sketches are done by Gordon Wagener though, the new director of Mercedes' Advanced design center in Cali.
