Amazing. This is simply amazing. This is how I'm seeing this car being marketed; as an SLR competitor for half the price and it looks better, both now true. Both the SLR and 599 have 620ish hp but one gets you a Ferrari petegry/history (don't forget it's half the price too)! And I'm pretty sure they're about the same weight. SLR may be carbon fiber but it's still a pig at 3,700lbs+ and the new 599 is 3,528lbs as it's 528 lighter than the 612, which comes in at 4,056 lbs (according to CAR). Really, the SLR now looks overpriced, even if it was at the same price as the 599. Ferrari is genious!! (sucks to be Mercedes)

I think Ferrari's reliability is much better today than it was in the past. Secondly, the 599 is the replacement to the 575, which costs $285K. Assume that the 599 increases in price by around 8% over its predicessor, like what happened with the new F430. That would only bring the price of the new 599 to $309k, which is still around $140k less than the SLR, a only $15K off being half the price, which in itself isn't that much when you're spending this much money for either car in the first place. Not to mention that the SLR is the VW Phaeton of the super car class. It just doesn't have the sports car petegre/exclusivity (MB is too diluted and common day of a brand today. Yes, McLaren did do a lot of the development work but MB killed it by having to have heavy luxury crap. It wears the MB badge on the hood, not the McLaren and for good reason.) to compete with Ferrari's Enzo and Porche's Carrera GT (arguably Porsche is also slipping towards heavy brand dillution, ie Cayenne and Cayman and plus whatever next model they're planning) just like how the VW Pheaton couldn't pull enough sales to compete against BMW's 7series and MB's S class. Different cars, but same old story. One brand can only strech so far. It's a fact.

That's true, but as long as the brand stretches in its direction then it's fine. The reason the Phaeton failed miserably because no one wants to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a VW. The other way to look at it is that no one wants to be seen in a $15k Benz either (for example... not that they have a car that cheap).

Porsche on the other hand are stretching the brand, which is good imo, but they are doing it the right way. Their cars are sporty and have heritage. As long as there's no MPV in that equation, i don't have a problem.

We run a car breakdown/recovery firm and we can get about five or six Ferraris a month. It might not sound like much - but considering how few of the cars there are on the road it suggests they're fairly temperamental

I really don't see any reason why SLR should be scared of another FROG from Maranello (design wise)...
