Re: Intresting! E55 vs E63 - MBUSA Comments

Here is another mbworld.org member who talked to the managing director of AMG in Germany about concerns regarding E63 performance.

I’ve made a few posts lately about my disappointment with the E63 and how it compared to my SLK55 and E550. Last year I met the Managing Director of AMG at a Hockenheimring event. He gave me his card and told me to contact him if I ever needed anything. On Monday I sent him an e-mail expressing my feedback on the E63. Would you believe that he personally called me from Germany yesterday to discuss the E63 and the concerns expressed in my e-mail. Now that’s Class with a capital C!

He told me that the E63 was designed to be much more of an athlete than the E55 and that it’s been engineered to outperform the E55 on the race track. The E55 he admitted is a better performer on the bottom 1/3 of the power band but the 63 is really designed to shine on the second 2/3rd’s of the power band and that it should be marginally quicker in the ¼ mile as well. AMG is very proud of the athleticism of the E63 and feels it’s a better all around package then the E55.

I asked him about the possibility of the E63 getting a twin turbo motor in 2009 and he did not acknowledge those rumors (No surprise there).

After his call I went to Euro Motorcars in Germantown, MD and purchased a Black E63 with the P2 package, Parktronic and Electronic Trunk Closer. I drove the car to Dulles Airport in Virginia and was thoroughly impressed with its athleticism and fuel economy. In moderate traffic I was averaging 21 MPG. When driving conservatively the E63 feels like a C230. It’s so smooth and docile it really feels like a 4 cylinder when being driven conservatively.

I’ve love the E55’s motor but feel that its breaks are "Uncle Fester" spooky and that the transmission is too benign. My initial impression is that the E55 definitely has more low end grunt but I’m looking forward to driving the E63. This particular E63 feels much more responsive than the other examples that I’ve driven.

That is a very classy responce from the AMG director. It seems like the new AMG is more similar to the M5 and the old one is more of a highway cruiser....Would that be a correct assumption?

Yes and the E55 guys hate it on MBWorld.org. They couldn't care any less about better handling all they want is torque. I don't know if I should agree with them or call them simpletons. I think the E63 is the all around better car no matter if the E55 can beat it 1 out of 5 times down a dragstrip. Better handling, steering, brakes and refinement in a still agressive package whats not to like?

I don't blame them for being pissed. They brought the E55 cause straight line performance was important to them and that is what they paid good money for. If they wanted handling, why not go all the way and get a M5 instead of the E63?

I can understand that somewhat which is why I said I didn't know how to feel towards them, but still the E63 isn't giving up much torque and it is still faster in a straight line most of the times according to AMG. They're mad because they wanted something to blow the E55 away in straight line speed.

Re: Intresting! E55 vs E63 - MBUSA Comments

MB did one mistake with E55. The car turned out to be too good for future cars from MB. Maybe they should have given the E55 450hp in the beginning and perhaps with little less torque than 700Nm so future AMG's would be much faster in acceleration than the E55.
Then perhaps there wouldnt be so much fuss on mbworld.org

It could very well be that the E63 is too much of a track car rather than a drag car like the E55 was.

Hey Andreas, did you find out the 335i lap time?
