OK, please don't go and blame the owner now. This kinda crap happens in the best of the best (reliability wise), so you really can't hold someone reporting the fault to blame. Even if he didn't follow break-in, and drove incredibly rash, it cannot be the reason to cause some error in the fuel pump or discharge or whatever its assumed to be currently.

Please be rational in thinking. I really don't want this forum to go the way of many others like MBWorld and SuperCars.net and to a certain extent, M5Board.

Re: Ouch! 63 Finally arrived, It broke down after 30 miles

To be honest this could happen to every new car! It could be a simple problem or maybe something is wrong in the fuel pump. Im positive that MB will fix his car and he will never experience this again.. Even new stuff breaks sometimes! New computers does, new cars does, knew cameras does etc etc etc.. The important thing is that it gets fixed, fast.

I couldn`t agree more. This couldn`t be that big of a issue for the E63 to be on your $hit list already! thats so immature and stupid. MBworld is one of the worst places to pick up comments. The only thing thay are good for is pictures.

Wow thats really rough and bad to see for MB. But like many have said, it happens to all brands, even the most reliable.

The break-in thing is sort of weird, because when we did our European Delivery for the Carrera S, we didn't have a break-in period. We drove that thing on the Autobahn the first day we picked it up, and the gentleman that delivered the vehicle to us said not to worry about it.

Re: Ouch! 63 Finally arrived, It broke down after 30 miles

Breaking-In a New Car

Basically you start off treating the engine very gently i.e. gentle revs and never more than 1/4 throttle.
General rule is not to exceed 3000 - 3500 rpm. for the first 500 miles. It is also a good idea to be kind to it for the first 2000 miles. Over time you gradually use more revs and more throttle until you eventually end up using the full range of the engine. It is important to eventually end up using all the power and rev range to wear harden various parts. It is also important that you do not keep to a single continuous speed or gear but vary your speed quite a bit during this time (a long highway journey is NOT a good break in if you just sit in top gear at a continuous speed). This is because things are still hardening up and you can wear a groove into them.
Modern engines break in relatively quickly, often 1000km, older designs took longer as the tolerances were not as precise. The first oil change is often a lot sooner than later ones as during break in rough edges from manufacturing will be worn off and end up in the oil.

So even brand new cars can be driven in the autobahn as long as the driver increases and decreases the speed and doesn't allow the RPM to go more than 3,500.

I'm sure there is a different way to break in diesels, seeing as they don't rev much more than 3,500?

Anyone know?

Hmmm...avoiding constant high speeds, keeping revs under 3500....definitely violated those on the first couple of days. I wonder if the intensive hot-testing they do to the engines allows the cars to be driven hard right away.

For diesels there should be a lower limit like 2,500 rpm or something.

Also some manufacturers brake in the engines on the bench for a period of time after the egnines came out of the production line , so perhaps Porche models don't need much brake-in.

Re: Ouch! 63 Finally arrived, It broke down after 30 miles

My car is a TT diesel and i was told that the brake in period lasts 1500km on my car and that i shouldn't drive it more than 180 km/h in that period. Wasn't a problem at all since it's on cca 2800 RPM when you drive it at 180 km/h...
