Art Deco
1920-1940 (approx)

A group of French artists formed La Société des artistes décorateurs in the early years of the 20th century. They planned to hold a large exhibition of French decorative art objects in 1915 ....but World War 1 obviously forced them to postpone the event.

Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes

This exhibition was opened in Paris in 1925. The luxury objects shown were created for a new wealthy elite who wanted modern objects but found pure Modernism (such as that exhibited by the Bauhaus) to be too austere and not expressive enough for their flamboyant tastes.

This new decorative style was later named Art Deco (or Art Déco).

It is an extraordinarily diverse style with many facets and many influences which branch off in different directions. It became a very popular style in the United States with Manhattan having many of the most famous examples of Art Deco architecture.

Mostly, Art deco is a style which celebrated the modern world with great creative fervor and dynamism. It took ideas from high Modernism and popularized them for the masses.

Art Déco was not taken seriously by many art historians for a long time ...as decorative or aplied arts were not generally seen as being as important as fine art. However, Art Déco has increasingly gained acceptance as an important aspect of 20th century Modern art and design heritage. The best Art Déco objects are some of the most exquisite things made in the 20th century -- some, in fact, would rate as some of the finest quality objects ever made in western art/object history.

I guess they had a different taste then, very Roman and Greek. Then again they were the two of the most powerful civilizations which have existed so it's not chocking that they were an inspiration.

I almost ejaculated today when I paid a visit to the local art museum and saw a "red & blue chair" there. It instantly caught my attention. What a beautiful piece of art. Breathtaking chair and I wish i could afford a replica. Here a who pictures I took:

The colour are off course much more bright and vivid in real life.

This angular theme is definitely a strong trend right now. In a few years it will become a lot clearer exactly what the "look" of our time really is -- sometimes it is difficult to decipher and understand what the contemporary "zeitgeist" (spirit of the time) really is. I wonder what has given rise to this very mathematical approach in contemporary design?

Some how the Lambo Reventon doesn't fit in there. Eventhough the other objects are angular and faceted they have a sense of softness unlike the Reventon with has a very hard and authoritative felling to it.

Microsoft's logo for their iPod competitor named Zune is also Faceted.

Wow, the prices now being paid at auction for rare late-twentieth century design objects are becomming staggering.

This sofa, which was designed by Zaha Hadid and made in a limited production in 1986 by the Italian furniture maker Edra, recently sold at auction for 72.000 Euros!

On the subject of Zaha Hadid, this is a recent project designed for Dubai -- amazing!
