Mazda Nagare concept (1996)

Cadillac has very cleverly re-interpreted styling themes from the past into the new vehicles ....but the results are not 'Retro' at at .....it is thoroughly contemporary and quite brilliant.

I have come to realize more and more, from reading a lot of discussions about the appearance of cars on GCZ, that I tend to look at car designs a little differently from many people on the forum.

There is an important difference between design and styling,

Audi's styling is very subtle ...and generally not very emotional. I can understand that many people find it to be quite boring compared to recent BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes.

My appreciation for Audi really started with the Audi A6 (C5) model (1998-2004)

I am still struck by the modernity of this model -- in some ways I like it more than its successor.

The rear of the vehicle is my favourite part -- the simplicity of the surfaces and the way the bumpers fit into the side panels -- all so beautifully and thoroughly resolved. Look at the way the C pillar is so seamlessly integrated into the body.

The number of elements used has been kept to a minimum; this, together with the flat surfaces of the panels, gives the vehicle a very clean appearance -- it is very modern.

Also Audi was one of the first to use a straight diagonal line at the rear door opening ...rather than the door following the circumference of the wheel arch -- BMW also did this with the E46. This is a very bold detail.

This is funny Rob, because this particular Audi A6 is one of the very few car I really hate. And I mean, hate with passion. i fond its design absolutely disgusting.

The whole car is so soft that it looks like it has melt like an ice-cream under hot sun. It has no structure, no line, nothing.

The bumpers are like taken out of another car, but not fitting, so Audi needed to adjust it by adding another piece of plastic...of black plastic, to try to enlighten the extremely heavy design... But that was so awful they painted it finally, on the last versions...
BTW these Audi always have a different colour for the bumpers, not perfectly matching the colour of the body, which caused it to look even more horrible...

Audi seemed conscious of the many design problems, and tried to give more lines to the bumpers in the FL version...

The old-looking, traditional front, with the soft and round rear... the incredible black thing around the license plate (obviously inspired by the Renault Espace III, 1996, who however painted it on most versions.... )

Concerning the transversal rear doors... Take a look at this Renault Laguna I (started in 1991, here it is the FL version with different grille and headlamps) to see who inspired Audi on this... Did the Audi design team at the time came from Renault?

Honestly, this is the worst German design since a number of years for me. I just can't stand it. Don't know exactly why...

I love the A8 on the other hand. And I am among the people who criticize audi's design, because every single new car looks almost exactly the same as the other cars in the line-up...I like their styling, but get bored to see it coming over and over again without any change...

For the rest I just have to admire your design culture and knowledge. Very interesting stuff!

I guess the aesthetic appeal of the A6 is a matter of personal taste.

It is starting to look a little dated now, but in 1998 it seemed right for the time.

The avant isn't as dated! the saloon definitely is now
