Re: Data Recovery

There are data recovery specialists -- since your hard drive is still actually working, you are quite fortunate -- my one crashed in February -- but it was a mechanical fault.

There are programs available to recover data ...but I am not sure which one is best. It would be worth consulting a professional for this one notic.

Also, you should consider buying another drive for backing up files ...an external USB drive is a great way to do it.

This one from LaCie is pretty cool -- 120GB with Encryption and a fingerprint recognition security.

This is what I am going to get. Ultra portable, very thin, with 100GB capacity.

Other than that, you could save your images on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

Notic, next time before pressing any "recovery buttons"... remove your hard drive and put it into another computer to retrieve data first.

What usually happens during power outages is the Windows boot sector gets corrupted. But that only prevents you from booting, it doesn’t mean that the rest of your files are corrupted.

Most of the time (99%), you can still retrieve your data when attaching your hard drive as a secondary on another PC. After that you can fix your Windows or do a full system recovery.

Re: Data Recovery

My hard drive crashed around Feb like rob's. I wasn't able to recover anything. I now have an external hard drive to prevent any of this stuff to happen again.

Re: Data Recovery

I'll try to ask one my friend, he's computer freak, but I'm not sure if he will know! If I get to know how to do it, I'll sure post it!

Try this, hopefully it will work... Its called system restore...

Left click Start button, click help and support, click system restore, then restore to the day you want, and it will bring back everything you had on your computer SAVED on the day you selected.

Let me know...

Re: Data Recovery

Thanks for all the adivce everyone Greatly appreciated. I have since gotten a UPS, some file recovery software (although it doesn't work very well ) and I plan on using my ipod to store backups until I decide on which external harddrive to get.

I tried this but apparently I don't have any saved days to restore the computer back to. I'll have to look into this feature a little more.

Very cool indeed, but I dont' think I need that much security. I'm leaning towards the plain porsche design for La Cie. I think I will wait until it goes on sale. Since this accident, my gf is deciding to get an external hard drive as well. She's thinkin of gettin the La Cie by Karim Rashid or the Lego brick. Thanks for the heads up.
