Re: Linux/Ubuntu anyone use it?

Funny you ask 'cause I was just checking this site today and thinking about trying Linux some time in the near future. Can't decide which distro to get, though...

Re: Linux/Ubuntu anyone use it?

if it's your first time i suggest setting it up on an old spare computer instead of your main computer. mine wouldn't start after i configured the graphics card improperly to run beryl. luckily, i had another computer to see what i did wrong and corrected it. beryl is visually stunning, i'm loving this multi workspace idea. now i'm kind of stuck on mythtv (lets you watch and record live tv).

Re: Linux/Ubuntu anyone use it?

I do. I use ubuntu 7.04 and it's great... I hardly miss windows.
In ubuntu 7.04 it's very easy to install the graphic card's driver: u just select an option from a menu. And it comes with some light form of beryl/xgl... It's just wonderful.
You should give it a try, you won't regret it!!!!

Re: Linux/Ubuntu anyone use it?

At work we're big on Linux, so its basically something I'm forced to use and learn (along with Windows).

We use SUSE generally, mainly SUSE 10/10.2 on servers. But now that Microsoft endorse SUSE, my colleagues are shifting away to other Distros (I personally don't care). My boss is into Ubuntu. In fact we installed up a server with Fiesty today.

From a server perspective I think that SUSE is better since it has yast. Most of our servers run in runlevel 3 since there isn't any need to run a GUI on a server, and Yast comes into its own as a management tool.

Pfft graphics card driver, that's nothing Try installing a new 3ware 9650SX RAID card with an old kernel. Now that'll drive you insane. I must admit, from a driver perspective, Windows outclasses Linux. Of course Windows isn't constantly updated etc etc, but from a usability perspective, Windows is easier when it comes to drivers etc.

If you have problems with your kernel, try updating. I think recent distributions offer automatic kernel updating (at least my ubuntu does). The lack of drivers isn't Linux' fault, the manufacturers don't offer support, but the chances are that some already had the problem you're having and been so kind as to post a how-to/driver. Linux users are friendly/supportive

Yeah our team has over 30 years experience in Linux, so I'm pretty much covered there.
