Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

To be honest I would never buy a laptop for 3000 euro. It will lose more than half of its value in 2 years. You can really get a well equipped high end 17 inch laptop for 1500 euro.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

Well if this is of any help Giannis, I'm now using a HP Compaq Presario V3000 and it has been working excellent so far. This laptop reinstated my faith in HP. All other laptops I have owned so far had so many problems I kept away from laptops for a while.

Oh and BTW, I got it free from my service provider.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

well, I started a topic about a new laptop but it's not very popular. I was thinking about the new macbook, black one, 2.4ghz, 2 gig ram, 250 gig Hard disc and Leopard.

But now, I discovered the Dell MSX M1330, almost identical specifications but cheaper, nicer looking though, just one problem: VISTA

How is it guys, is it really the POS they say it is, is it slow? is it reliable? What about pirated software, can it be done?

If it's ok, it's dell for me, cause it's one fine looking laptop.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

There's a nice comparison test over at PC Magazine where they've rated Mac OS 10.5.1 (Leopard), Vista, XP and Ubuntu in following categories: Price, Installation, Interface, Bundled Software, Third-Party Software, Drivers/Hardware, Networking and Security.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

thx for the link, vista not looking that bad. you just need the power to handle it. I'm looking at buying the Dell XMS M1330, adding another gig of Ram, making it 3 gig, and it's still €150 cheaper than the macbook with just 2 gig ( btw, adding ram in a mac is crazy expensive )

Technical question, what is most important Ghz? Ram of Mhz for a smooth working OS?

thx again for the advice

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

Rik, for general use RAM would be more beneficial. But if you want to do more video editing or certain programs which are heavy on processor usage, you would need the higher processor.
Also, about RAM on the MacBook, you don't need to use the Apple provided ones. Look around on the internet. Crucial and OWC etc. provide great solutions for cheap. I got 4 gigs for my iMac from Crucial for like < 100 USD. Even for the Dell it would be cheaper plus as good.
About Vista, I would suggest keeping a copy of XP also. I used Vista on a 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB,250GB Vaio TZ and it was slow as hell. I had installed Vista myself since it originally came preloaded with XP (Home Premium Original).
About Leopard, I'm using it now and I must say its pretty stable in 10.5.2 spec with certain extra updates. I had a terrible time with 10.5-10.5.1. The MacBook really is a good option but in the end the only reason I choose Mac's over other makers is from OS X. So if your willing to use Windows then the Dell is definitely the better option.

Re: In the market for a new laptop - Need help

thx, that's also gonna be my choice, with some extra ram it's just € 950 for 3 gig, 1.83Ghz 120 hard disk, HDMI, remote, excellent webcam and some toys: the dell will be the one
