Re: Windows Vista

I heard from my friend that his copy has plenty of problems. I'll sit this one out for at least a few months.

BTW, how did your friend get it so cheaply... We've phased out 95% of those shops.

Re: Windows Vista

I used the Beta for a month or so (that was a few months ago) on my then system (AMD Athlon64). The OS was super stable with no major bugs. That said, the last build I used still had many new features disables (notably Aero).

Anyhow overall I was happy with it, the new way your data is organised is nice, plus it looks good (almost as nice as OSX, almost).

BTW, for gamers, note that DX9 execution is slower than on XP because it is not native, combined that with so-so initial hardware drivers, current gaming is actually slower. It should improve as drivers do and DX10 comes into play.

Anyhow, I just bought Vista Home Premium yesterday but I haven't installed it yet. I'll let you guys now how stable it is in the next few days.

Re: Windows Vista

Also, for those considering upgrading... be aware that you need alot of RAM, 2 GB are recommended.

Now before you hear hippies bitching about how MS cannot program, note that it's not due to bad programming, but a intentional design approach. Vista tries to cache as much as possible in the RAM as oppose to paging it on the hard drive, this has two positive results: faster execution (RAM access is much faster than drive access), and lower power consumption, notably in laptops as less hard drive access means less hard drive head rotations which are power cotsly.

Overkill, nah. I've had 2 gigs for almost 2 years. But I run alot of intensive apps, so its necessary.

BTW, 1 GB is enough to run Vista confortably... but 2 GB is optimal.

Re: Windows Vista

I will stick with my XP prof. and my 98 SE up until summer. I will buy a new laptop at that time, and probably with Vista premium installed...

For now, my pc needs much upgrade to be vista ready or whatever they call it. I am happy with my XP though...

$400?! I suppose you mean retail copies... BTW, never buy retail, always buy OEM. Same version minus a fancy box and half the price.

Paid mine 150 canadian, which is about 110 USD (for Home Premium). Ultimate was 249 canadian (~180 USD).
