Nikon D80 Released today

I have been waiting for this camera since it was shown on the Nikon website as a teaser.

I really like it personally, and look forward to possibly purchasing it.

I am in between this model and the Nikon D200

Re: Nikon D80 Released today

I am thinking of buying a new DSLR -- this is certainly a model that interests me ...but I am even more excited by the fact that Carl Zeiss are now making lenses for Nikon 35mm and Digital SLRs.

Hey, isn't Carl Zeiss the people who make the lenses for the Nokia N Series, too?

Re: Nikon D80 Released today

Zeiss are working with several companies now ...they make beautiful lenses -- the most notable difference is the colour rendition (I have Zeiss lenses for my Hasselblad) ..the only thing is, these new lenses for Nikon SLRs are not AF lenses.

Re: Nikon D80 Released today

They are expensive Mike, like all German-made lenses ...but Nikons own Nikkor lenses are pretty expensive too ...and they are also excellent quality. But in my experience, the image quality produced by Zeiss is pretty much unsurpassed -- although the Leica lenses are amazing too.

There is much debate on the issue of Japanese vs. German lenses ....it's not that one is better than the other, they are just different.

I have owned a Leica M6 for over a decade, it is a terrific little 35mm camera -- there are many people who criticize the M cameras ...but they tend to be people who have never actually used one before. One thing about the Leica M lenses that is interesting is there is sometimes a very slight (barely discernible) distortion of the image -- this would usually be considered an error and would be corrected by the manufacturer ..but sometimes it does give the image a strangely 3D effect. The thing is, the colour rendition from the Leica lenses is so outstanding, I can easily tell which photographs were taken with the Leica as opposed to my Nikon.

In some ways I miss 35mm camera technology. Someone in another forum was making a joke that 35mm will make a come back since it may not be considered 'electronic' when boarding planes. This is referring to the current issues of boarding airlines across sea's, specifically those going to and from the UK.

Getting back on the topic, I think that two other camera's that are superb right now are the:

Canon 30D

and

Nikon's D200

If there is any camera I could have it would be the Nikon D200, although I am a little worried about the vertical banding that has been caused by soem of the D200's. However, I think Nikon has fixed the problem and it should not be a problem. One thing people are waiting for is to see if the D80 suffers from the same issue, since they are similiar in some aspects.

Re: Nikon D80 Released today

Great cameras BMWFREAK.

As far as 35mm photography is concerned, it is all but dead -- I wonder who is actually buying the Nikon F6? -- it is a very nice camera but the market for professional 35mm SLRs is virtually non-existent now.

Nikons D2X -- I wouldn't mind one of these even though it is far more than I need .....I guess I'm just excessive sometimes.

D2Xs. Never tried one, but I would really like to see what 8 fps would sound like.

I wouldn't mind one of these:
