Re: Upgraded 2 SLR, Need help!!

I know pretty much nothing about night shots...

But I'll give it a try.
Having a tripod helps. That way you can use lower shutter speeds and higher F and so on. High iso makes your picture more grainy so try to keep that as low as possible, but sometimes you have no choice but to raise it. And if you can, get a flash.

I'm sure there's someone who can give some more useful advice.

Re: Upgraded 2 SLR, Need help!!

What i'd suggest to begin with is leave your camera on fully auto, turn your flash off and use a tripod or steady surface (such as, well.. the ground) - of course, so there's no blur. Your camera will know it cannot compensate for low light by using the flash, so it'll adjust the iso/shutterspeed/aperture accordingly. Once you've taken a few shots on auto, you'll see what shutter speed and aperture it's using and the effect that's creating: from there, you can make slight adjustments so as to get your desired effect.

These are some spontaneous portraits i took the other night with a friend, we'd just gone for a walk (with a ukulele ), I saw the moon was out so i told him to sit down. it was taken with a dodgey happy snapper; fully auto, just resting on the ground to rectify any handshake.

and another, streetlight in view

they were both at 1" exposure

Re: Upgraded 2 SLR, Need help!!

That's a good tip Germaniac. And manual is always best, but getting inspiration from auto mode is a great way to start.

And a remote trigger is good to use when using a tripod, eliminates any form vibration.

Or you can turn the function on which means the camera takes the camera a few seconds after you have pressed the button!

Re: Upgraded 2 SLR, Need help!!

How much did you pay for 400D?
I'm amateur as well, I don't know much..Shooting at night is very interesting, with long exposure. But it takes time and lots of shots to learn something and take some nice photos.
Here are some of my photos with longer exposure...You can get some cool shots when it's foggy night, or just before the sky gets totally dark.

Have fun with camera!
