Re: AMS: C 200 Kompressor

Ok, here are the highlights. Basically AMS liked the C200 Kompressor and were quite enthusiastic about its handling and braking and comfort strengths. The trunk and load capacity are impressive for a car of this class. On the downside, the rear passenger area is quite small and the standard 17" Avantgarde rims decrease the comfort on uneven and rough roads.

Overall: AMS said the new C-Class combined traditional elements of Mercedes philosophy with newfound ideals like sport. They also said this car has the stuff to edge out the Audi A4 or BMW 3-Series and that a test against these cars will come shortly!

Here's AMS rating on the five main criteria's they tested on the C200 Kompressor.

HÄRTETEST (Brakes, Comfort etc.) = 5/5
DAILY DRIVING = 4/5
MULTIMEDIA/INTERIOR = 4/5
LONG DISTANCE DRIVING = 5/5
COSTS = 3/5

Here's the list of pros and cons.

+ Refined 4-cylinder motor
+ Handling + slalom
+ Responsive steering
+ Powerful brakes
+ Large trunk & load capacity
+ Interior ergonomics and easy to use controls
+ Build quality
+ Safety features
+ Powerful Xenon lights
+ Predicted low depreciation

- Comfort suffers with 17" rums on uneven roads (Avantgarde)
- Poor rearward visibility when parking (Park Assist a recommended buy for 815 Euros)
- Cramped rear passenger compartment
- Expensive options and prices
- Spartan interior design
- Loud engine at high Autobahn speeds (C200 Kompressor)
- Delayed engine response at low speed kickdowns

It's going to be Audi A4 2.0 TDI vs BMW 320d vs Mercedes C220 CDI.

The C-Class will probably win. This is AMS after all.

In fairness though, it's the newest of the bunch too.

yeah I know, c-class is a good car, no doubt, in fact they all three are.

A swedish carmag tested new C-class to 3-serie and A4. C-class won the comparison but they said it was a very close call between 3er and C-class.
Soon a new A4 is coming and my money this will be the best car in media when it arrives and Yannis will do the raindance of happiness

btw I must ask, do you know if AMS in this issue tested facelifted 1-series?

No, but I picked up a copy of an AMS test of the facelifted 1-Series and facelifted 530i at a BMW dealer in Munich. They praised the new 530i for its power and efficiency and the improved comfort as well as driving dynamics. The same was said for the BMW 1-Series. They especially liked the 118i because it totally kills the "outdated" 116i in performance and fuel economy. On average, the 116i sedan uses 2 liters more gasoline / 100 km than the 118i!

AMS stated that possibly when the facelift comes, Mercedes will have new entry level 4-cylinder engines for the C-Class that will dump Kompressor technology and use advanced turbos.
