BMW DSG gearbox?

I recall reading somewhere that BMW is working on it's own double clutch gearbox, in the original article it was named "ZSG"? "Zirect Shivt Gearbox"? I dont' know? Just curious though as many have questioned this since BMW's SMG has been criticized so much for it's rough up/down shifts.

Re: BMW DSG gearbox?

As I understand it, SMG will still be the option for M cars and DSG for standard bimmers. I think DSG is still under development.

Yea, I heard that to, are you sure it will be called DSG? Cause that's what Audi call it!

Re: BMW DSG gearbox?

ZSG stands for "Zentral Synchron Getrieb" (Central Synchronized Gearbox). Whatever that means.

It was reported - mainly in AutoBild - it's a gearbox with only one but very fast acting clutch (that eliminates clutch slipping), and with a central shaft that is permanently "in gear" (that eliminates loss of power and torque during shifting, and prevents from choosing wrong gear when gearbox is in a full automatic mode). Such a gearbox design will also allow a driver to skip the gears if necessary (e.g. shifting from 2nd gear directly in to 5th), and there will be different modes of shifting speed available to choose from (like in SMG III).

According to my info ZSG is scheduled to be initially presented in 3er Coupe, most likely in a 335i model (I6 petrol turbo engine). I have no most recent info on ZSG status, so that's not 100% sure. Let's wait for a month and we'll see.

ZSG will be featured in regular BMW models only (presumably in sporty "Si" labeled versions, and hi-end ones with turbo engines). "M" models will stick to SMG gearbox concept which is much more racing oriented gearbox than ZSG.
New MINI (presumably Cooper S) is also to adopt the ZSG gearbox in the future, but it will be optional.

Wow, I really like the sound of that for sure

Re: BMW DSG gearbox?

Btw, there is NOTHING wrong with SMG shifting. There are some idiots who can't shift!

SMG is a "Sequential MANUAL (!!!!!!!!!!) Gearbox". The only difference for driver is that there is no clutch pedal (clutch is automated - to prevent slipping and loosing power/ torque). All the other shifting procedures are the same as when operating a classic manual: loose a preassure on gas pedal when shifting.

When shifting right, SMG operates almost perfectly.

But some idiots who call themselves "automotive journalists" think that "no clutch pedal = automatic gearbox".

Re: BMW DSG gearbox?

When I drove the M6 , first time trying SMG. It was easy and fun, I even drove the car in the city without automatic mode. Piece of cake. But be prepared to change gear when you push the pedal to the floor cause the needles move fast

Re: BMW DSG gearbox?

After almost two years of SMG, I can safely say it is superior to a manual gearbox in every way.
